Fuel Sender Maintenance

My fuel gauge seems to be dropping far to fast, I think the fuel gauge float is only serving the top half/third of the tank.

I want to remove the self tapping screws and check the sender, should I do this with an empty tank or just do it as is?

My concern is creating a spark, however small, but still risking igniting the existing fuel. Appreciate I might be worrying about bugger all.

A full tank I safer than an empty tank

You should disconnect the wires to the sender

It's quite difficult to spark off metal unless you rubb something along the serrated edge, removing a screw should be fine

Disconnect battery, both live and earth

Perhaps standing in rubber wellies naked on news paper with an earth strap from a prominent part of your anatomy may help

If you take the sender off the fumes will dilute with air, it's not worth the risk, just be carefull

On a work trip to Jordan I saw people welding up petrol tanker tanks, they set fire to fumes leaking from a hole while welding up another part, this is supposed to prevent explosions.

How they weld up the last hole I did not wait to find out
