Granada?

OK, so I am still looking at donor options. I have been offered a granada very very cheaply (2 litre). It is aparently VGC, but the bodywork is shot. Will this be any use to me? Are the mechanics vastly different to the sierra, what can and can't I use!

The spec of my kit is here.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! I am not planning on using the engine anyway as I am using a 1600 for this.

Many thanks (again!)

Hi Chris

I had a Granada I bought for £20 just for the EFI bits I sold some parts for £50 and paid £30 to get rid of what was left, therefore EFI sytem and unleaded head for £0. Back to your question some parts are the same however the brakes are disc on the rear I think the diff and drive shafts and bigger also. The loom is a nightmare the Granadad has about 10 times the wires you would need it took me an age just to get the EFI bit out. My advise would be to get a Sierra donor I am certain it will mean less tears in the end.

Right... I wil most likely be using the vicky-green wiring loom thingy supplied with the kit. I am not too worried abojut the rear brakes being discs, but if the shafts and the diff are bigger then that would probably be a problem! Could anyone confirm this!?

Many thanks.

I think (but please don't quote me!) that the speedo output on the gearbox is electronic, not mechanical as on other type 9 boxes.

Ok if you are going for electronic dials but not so good for the supplied sierra dash pack. The offending part of the gearbox can be changed but it is probably not worth the grief....

Correct - speedo is electronically fired ie no rotating cable - I have 2.9 V6 granada scorpio which I have owned for 8 years with very sweet engine but blown torque convertor on auto box - I was looking into swapping to manual box from my sierra donor and using 2.9 V6 in my 2B but engine management system also takes signals from electronic gearbox signal as does trip computer and cruise control etc. etc. The Scorpio also has a limited slip diff which I would like to use but the shaftes are different and would rquire serious surgery ! It all looks possible with a lot of time to spend sorting things out but I want to get the thing on the road and have some fun ! Its taken me two and a half years to get the back axle in !

Having sought help from knowledgeable people I have decided to stick with 1.8 carb pinto from donor.

As nearly everyone will probably agree - you get a great thrill from even the standard engines.

Mick, i notice that you have been toying with the idea of putting the famous 2.9 V6 cossy motor from your Granada into your 2B.

I am thinking of a similar mod and seeing as you have decided against it, would appreciated your thoughts to see whether what i havein mind is sheer lunacy.

Well i plan to get a cossy V6 lump and bolt it to a type 9 box, if this will work?! But also i want to put one of those blower hats from the mad american indy cars instead of the normal inlet manifold (pic attached).

I think this will produce a fantastic looking, performing and sounding car- admittedly with alot of hard work but cant seem to find any info on tuning or converting the engine.

Any thoughts?

i'm pretty sure the stud patterns on the gearbox are different for straight and v6 engines. i'd have thought it fairly easy to modify though, or 'burtons' may even supply a converter plate.

I suppose if the cossy lump is going to be effort and expensive (as most cosworth stuff is) i may be better off with a good essex lump. At least most stuff on them is mechanical!

Toying with the idea of a chevy block but then ive got the grief of making the mounts and that fit-not to mention wiring and the like, and probably a trailer to carry extra fuel in!

Stuart,

Mine isnt a Cosworth and it wont cost me anything as I already own it and know the engine was good when last driven 3 years ago. I think I remember from your previous posts that you have a 2.1 part tweeked pinto ? You would not get much better performance and almost negligible top speed improvement even with a Cosworth Cologne. One of our Derbyshire members who has had a couple of Rover 3.5 V8 Robin Hoods, one of which was bursting with BHP gave me some figures something along the lines of - Standard 2.0 pinto, top speed 120mph - 3.9 tuned V8 with carbs like dustbins, top speed 135 mph differenc in cost was in the order of £2500 which in rough terms is £165 per extra mile per hour ! There is an almost total lack of streamlining to the Shape of the car and you just cant get it to go through the air much quicker no matter what lurks under the bonnet.

£2500 would Tax, Insure and pay for tyres and petrol for 4 years for me !

Makes you think eh !

If I cant easily resolve the 2.9 issues I'm just going to stick with the 1.8 from the donor and manage with 110 mph which is 20 mph more than I ever drive my Peugeot anyway !

I have also got an Essex of unknown pedigree, which I believe is a 2.8 and I have carb etc etc for it so I might have a go some time in the distant future !

Cheers
