Servo Assisted Breaking

Due to the engine I'm using in my 2B (not a pinto) the inlet manifold is on the driver side. This means there is no room for the brake servo and master cylinder. I have thought of putting in a cross link and mounting it on the other side, but this then gets in the way of the battery. My other option is to not bother with the servo unit. Has anyone got a car out there without the servo and does it stop? any suggestions?

Nige,

what engine are you putting in it ?

I put a DOHC engine in mine and as you have, the inlet manifold gets in the way of the servo.

I used the linkage from a fiesta to mount the servo on the passenger side and the support plate fits in front of the battery.

Have a look at some pics of it on my web site

Thanks for that Les, I got a crosslink system from a mk IV escort and it looks the same. I think thats the route I will take.

Thanks again

Hi, see my earlier post about all or nothing brakes - no replies as yet! In the meantime I have disconnected the servo, and yes the car does still stop, but the extra shove you need to give the brakes comes as a surprise!!

Having driven the car in the wet (would not even contemplate this with the servo connected!) I think without the servo is the way to go, just take the time to get used to the brakes - you can still lock the wheels, but there is much more feel, and overall this is a much better compromise.

I had the same sort of grief with my engine, although still a pinto it is gifted with a T25 turbo conversion, hence no room for servo, steering column, clutch cable and all the rest. Not to mention heat.

Managed to actually raise the whole mounting panel allong with the pedals up and back a few inches, to give clearance. Very fidly but worth it and is still solid as a rock. The pedal position is actually better than originally intended.

Ill try and get some pics.

Good luck

Stu
