Welcome on board :D

The most straight forward engine to fit is a SOHC "Pinto".

2.0 litre is popular and is available as Carb or injection (inj turns out a few more BHP)

The standard 2B kit is designed around the Pinto engine.

The DOHC (2.0l) and CVH (1.8l) have the exhaust on the passenger's side of the car and this means that it is necessary to fit the servo etc on the passenger's side. This is possible but you will need to get hold of Fiesta or Escort/Orion parts to use the transfer cross shaft for the brakes.

The injection Pinto unit does not quite fit under the bonnet of the 2B ( the plenum chamber is too high) - but plenty of builders have modified this (or the bonnet).

Re' the specification of the donor Sierra - the higher the spec the more bits you won't need - central locking ; electric windows / sunroof; heated rear window; rear wash wipe; etc. etc.

The injection engines were normally available on GL and above spec.

The 2.0 litre Pinto went on to about 1989 after that it's DOHC

The 1.8 changed to CVH about a year earlier

I'm not too sure when the 1.6 changed to CVH - I think it was after the 1.8

I got a 1989 2l GLS (see the www site) it's got all the parts and as it's injection it will run on unleaded, also turns out 115BHP as standard. I got a special bonet for the plenum chamber to fit.

I did nothing to the engine, I literley just took it out and stuck it strate in the kit! it was running fine in the donor so it should still run fine in the kit.

I can concentrate on the rest of the car and have fun playing with the engine later on.

You realy do need the Pinto engine, this is what the kit was designd for, others have fitted a hole host of alternitives with excellent results but its a lot of work.

Welcom to the madnes! and enjoy the build. Just remember that any problems you have, others have already overcome and are only too willing to help!

Hi

Also watch what engine mounts you get...the early 2 litre's have cast iron mounts with 2 bolts though the rubber mounts, these are no good...you need the mounts with a bolt in the top and a bolt through the bottom...also the lenght of the iron arms is too short on the driver's side...

All the above is good advice - in addition it is a big plus if you can buy a donor with at least a few weeks mot and tax so that you can insure it and run it round for a while to do a bit of real life fault finding. This can pay off big time if you find something that needs seeing to before you build faults into your pride and joy.

If you want to go down the 2L EFI route you could do what I did :-

Buy a Granada E or F 2.0 i for £20 with a weeks tax and MOT

Remove the bits you need in my case the Injection head and all the bits to go with it.

Sell some of the the remaining bits on ebay for £52

Pay the local scrappie £30 to take the rest away

Cost = -£2 Nice one

There are bucket loads of old Grannies out there going cheap.

You need a Type 9 gearbox, where reverse is left & forward.

I think some Grannys had the MT 75 box, where reverse is right & back.

They are physically bigger, can be fitted but require some major mods.

Stick with a Type 9 for (relative!!) simplicity.

Bob.

Yeah early goes up to about 'A'reg, the one with the gilled front end. . The seiries 1 kits needed these, and I bought a 'C'reg. had to buy a 'X'member (series 1 used that too) and engine mounts from an 'early car
