£45 For An Injected Cylinder Head?

As long as the head is good, it's a good price.

+ives, it will be unleaded friendly, efi can be attached to it.

-ives, it may be an emax head (dangerous to port), it may be a low comp head and need machining, depending on tolerances a carb manifold may not cover the inlet ports

Ideally, check the head with the springs off, then you can check valves and guides for play, and alo the areas between valve seats, as most craks appear here.

The original head was injection and I wasn't intending to port it or fit carbs,

so that's ok.

Just a bit peeved, cos I paid £80 for the donor Sierra and now I'm being asking £45 just for a head! :gdit: Must be very careful with that hammer in future :boohoo:

Sounds about right, I got one 18 months ago for £30. Check the stampings on the side near cylinder no.4 to be sure it is ok for unleaded, someone will be able to provide these, they are in the Haynes manual but I am at work now.

The £30 was for the complete head including valves, camshaft etc. but it was not off the shelf type of scrappy it was a find it yourself and take off what you want type, so I did all the dirty work. He wanted to sell me the whole engine for £100 but I only wanted the head.

Good luck, I know these things are getting scarce these days.

Went and got the head on Friday evening. There was rust on the camshaft

lobes, so I tried to knock him down to £35 but had to settle for £40 in the end.

Not a big problem, as I've got a new Kent cam for it anyway!

Otherwise, it looked good although he didn't have the engine mileage details

to hand unfortunately. That set me thinking, though, if you wanted to refurbish

a head you'd need new cam bearings and valve guides on top of the cam, springs

etc. But how do you replace valve guides, other than oversizing them?? They look VERY firmly attached to me. I'm probably not going to do this anyway,

but just interested.

Cheers,

Pete

Hey Doc,

I don't think Peter will be going anywhere near his new cylinder head with a hammer.

I imagine they have to be pressed out of the head

Burton list both cast iron and bronze guides for Pintos

I also thought that early Pintos managed without removable valve guides - if wear occured the head had to be reamed out and oversize stemmed valves used
