This Isn't Funny Anymore

After fixing the holed sump, fitting a remote filter, sorting out the ride hieght and handling, I went for a ride in the evening sun feeling very proud of myself.

At somewhere near the legal speed limit, on the M23 on te outside lane, I lost all drive. I pulled onto the hard shoulder to discover that I had clutch and gearchange. The drive shafts and prop were still in place.

It seems that the clutch cover plate and or the thrust bearing have finally given up the ghost.

Now I have a week to fix before the Brands Hatch experience!!! :gdit: :gdit: :gdit:

It gets worse

The clutch assembly seems to be operating normally as seen through the starter motor apperture. What is disconcerting is the sound of bits of metal tumbling around the gearbox as I turn the rear wheels in gear.

I suspect my 'new' gearbox is b******d

I'll look again but if you can imagine a tumble drier full of washers and screws turning away, that is what the gearbox sounds like. There seems to be a lack of connection between the rear of the gearbox which turns and the input shaft which doesn't!

I've always had my doubts about the alingnment of the gearbox and the rover engine.

When I took my gb out the bolts that go throgh the bell housing are thredded all the way and there are no location dowels as you would expect, all holes are plasma cut and not such a good allingnment with the engine.

When running free with clutch depressed you can here there is some sort of noise from the gearbox.

What oil should it have? it seemed a bit thin to me! that which RH supplied, is this normal with MT75 gearbox?

Engine and gearbox now on garage floor. I think I may have been premature in my assessment of the gearbox, because when I took the clutch off, I found there was a slight problem with the '2 part' friction plate. The gearbox seems OK, i.e. when I engae a gear, the front and the back rotate!!

There's a couple of words for that - **ggered or ****ed

Have you got a decent transmission specialist in your area - might be worth showing it to them for an opinion.

I've seen them where one or two "webs" have broken / cracked but nothing that bad - not on a road car certainly.

Is that the original plate supplied by RHSC - if so I'd certainly e-mail those pics to them for comment

Well look on the bright side - it's not the gearbox
