Yeah, my point is that there is nowt wrong with the Ford item, if replaced with a new one.
There isn’t providing you can get the thing to stay in place (mines held in with a jubilee clip) but the one Jim has on the NW site is a far better and IMHO a much more professional approach.

As I remember, the ford bush expects to be fitted in a thicker bulkhead and perpendicular to the shaft - I made up a bracket as shown by the thick black line. The springy washerery thing goes down on top of the bush to prevent the inner bush bit migrating up the shaft.

No I don't want anything for it although a can of beer sounds nice, and yes I am going to Detling in the Hood not brave enough for camping just yet. I am going Saturday and Sunday may stay over B&B or hotel, see you ther

I have had the same problem on my SSpec. I have fitted a piece if tube over the steering rod between the bush and the joint above the pedal box. This prevents the bush moving up. Works fine and bearing (no pun intended) in mind the bush has only done 4000 miles, it's the design of the setup rather than a wear and tear problem. o fitting a new one one necessarily cure it.

hi dredd

i may be getting confused as i am not looking at the car, but by fitting a tube

over the original column does this stop the column moving in..

sounds a very good idea thou. i would like to change the bearing as it came out

of an f reg sierra with a 100,000+ miles on the clock, and i a can only assume

it to be original.

will certainly look at your idea when i replace it.

cheers

Hopefully we're not talking at cross purposes, but between the bush and the joint between the steering column and the triangle end of the steering rod, there is about (from memory) 3 ". Slip a piece of tube over the steering column at this point and it allows free movement of the rod, but will not allow the bush to move upwards. It is the opposite of the 2b, where I beleive the tendency is for the bush to work down from the bulkhead towards the rack.
