Check Your Nuts

Snapperpaul

Recommended Posts

Finally got round to putting on the short sump ( thanks Bill) and found that on my "only done 1000 miles" engine that all the sump bolts were loose, not a problem as the gasket was sealed on with grey silicone.

When i came to remove the pickup i noticed that the cover plate of the oil pump had a bolt part way out.

I nipped it up tight but am now thinking of taking the sump off again.

If the bolt had dropped it could have been good by engine

What would be best, Locktight or spring washers or just heave it up tight and leave well alone?

Sump bolts will always "come loose"

Actually they don't, it's the cork gasket that is loosing it's resistance to being compressed. It's a good idea to just check sump bolts every now and again, they'll probably need constant "nipping up"

The other bolt should have a single spring washer on it (I think......but stand corrected if wrong, it is some considerable time since mine was off)

I will check with Burton Power, where the oil pump came from, and take off the sump before it goes in the car.
