Today a friend of mine told me that you can no longer buy 2 pac or cellulose paint unless your "registered" and that paints are being replaced with based ones that in his words are crap. Ive heard nothing in the news, can anybody clarify this please.

Get hold of October's Practical Performance Car or borrow Nigel's... there's a whole piece on it.

Long story short, yes but no. You'll be able to get it for some time yet & if you have an old car you'll be able to register to get it for touch up purposes etc.

It's more about commercial applications than you with a tin can on your drive is my feeling.

As usual the legislation is a mess... like everything led by EC Regs...

although obviously I DO NOT condone this ;) you MAY be able to still get hold of 2pac from certain classic car specialists, I think a few may have accidentally stock piled popular colours before the legislation came in, they naughty naughty boys!!!!! but Id advise you go in your hood so they dont think your official

If you mean water based paints, my Cousin is a sprayer and whilst they are more difficult to get a good finish ( at the moment ) he feels that once mastered ( which he has ) are every bit as good. With any good paint job you need a little more that your average garage space to make it special.

Your mask has to be better too... plus it takes ages to dry so you need a real "clean room"... As I said, it's all in PPC, the article is pretty good (or maybe it was Practical Classics)..

Water based is just as easy to use as 2k. Its still a clear over base process but as pointed out earlier does take longer to dry before it can be laquered. In a booth its dried by a series of venturies (maybe spelt wrong). These comsume massive amounts of air so a big compressor is required. However it will air dry no problem and for spot repairs you could always speed it up with a hair dryer!!

We are in the middle of swapping over from 2K Direct Gloss (DG) to the new paint system to meet with the 07 regulations at work. We have known this has been coming into force for sometime now and have been trying out different paint systems for free. ;) Lucky for us our sprayer DANGEROUS DAN (THE MAN WITH THE SPRAY GUN) has used the water based paints before. Plus I got old Spankys GRP parts painted on a free paint demo as well :D :D by Dan.

Like every thing in the the body trade you may find that 2K will still be around after the new regulation come in, they tryed to bring in a new type of spay gun a few years back called the HPLV gun which gave out less over spay mist but you can still go out and buy a standard spray gun from places like B&Q and Machine Mart. So what was the point. :o At the end of the day all these regulation are there for is to make us bodyshops use the paint companys latest product they have come up with

Interestingly enough the new regulations banning the use of Celly and 2 pack , that come into force on 1st January 2007, only apply to the motor trade.

So if you fancy haveing your plane or boat sprayed you can still buy celly for that - me thinks there are going to be plenty of orders for BMW Astrel Blue boat paint please lol
