Insuring My Garage

Some *#$% recently tried to break into the lock-up garage where I keep

my half-built Lightweight. :o So, after fitting a heftier padlock, I called Endsleigh,

who insure the contents in my flat. However, they told me that they "just

don't do garages, residential property only". They passed me onto some

other company, but they don't do that either. I tried searching the net and seems

to be harder to find than I expected <_< Anyone on here managed to insure

their garage, bearing in mind that mine is 5 miles from my flat and completely

unrelated? I've heard of kit car insurers doing build-up insurance, but it perhaps

only lasts 6 months and then you have to take their usual car insurance for

on-the-road, at an inflated price? Any advice welcome....

Mine has been on build up with Adrian Flux for several years! Costs about £40/year and at present car is 50 miles from home, took a bit of hassle but they agreed in the end.

Pete,

No it's just a yearly policy.Depends what you keep in your garage as to whether this is the right policy.I never leave any tools in mine so it's just the car.

Peter,

The policy I have is called FT laid up and is placed with Equity Red Star(whoever they are). The information from Flux says to ask for their GOLD department when phoning.

Hope this helps

Hi Eric,

I spoke to Adrian Flux and they said they wouldn't do it. How exactly

did you hassle them to get them to agree?!

Ta,

Peter :D

They may well not insure your garage per se, but they will insure your build up kit, with some extra for tools, in otherwords just what you should want.

I tried Adrian Flux again, specifically mentioning FT laid up. Their quote was

around £112. I then spoke to MSM, who quoted me £52.50, although their

excess is £250... Otherwise, I have been totally unable to find anyone

else to insure. These policies are not strictly garage contents, they don't

include tools, but they do include fire, theft etc of the kit and all donor components

with receipts. Debating now whether to go for it.

comparitively speaking, tools are fairly cheap and easy to replace if nicked. can you say the same for for your cherished, one of a kind car?

take out the insurance and try to keep the number of tools in your garage to an absolute minimum. failing that, state the tools were in the car if it gets nicked or increase the value of cover to pay for lost tools.

just my thoughts.
