HI,

I have a 1600 pinto that ran in my car all be it not that well.Put some fresh fuel in because it had been standing for a while, changed plugs ,leads, cap and arm now won't run and back fires through carb when you turn it over .I'm sure i put everthing back as it came off.

Any ideas. :(

Sounds like an ignition timing issue.

I play around with mine every week, not convinced I've got ignition just right....

If its backfiring through the carb(s) on cranking, then I would have thought it is over advanced, sparking before the inlet valve closes..hence the firing out through the carbs..

The only decent way to see the ignition timing is to use a strobe light, the 1.6L should be around 6-8deg static advance with the dizzy/esc vaccuum pipe clamped. Depending on what fuel you use you can advance it a little more..

The 2.0L 8-12deg static advance.

Or you have put the plug leads back in the wrong holes in the dizzy cap! With No 1 Piston at TDC on its fireing stroke the rotor arm should point to the TDC mark on the rim of the dizzy at about '4 o'clock' and the No ! lead should be in the dizzy cap in line at that point also.

Another thing to look out for if you have a Bosch dizzy is the position of the locating peg that fits in the slot in the dizzy body, there are 2 types of cap that look similar but the timing is about 20 odd degrees out. all the best George.
