106 Diesel, Alternator Problems

Hi all,

I'm having regular alternator problems on my 2001 106 diesel (1.5L)

So far its had 3 alternators, it starts with the power steering getting heavy, (which is electric) and then noticing the battery light constantly on -when on tickover, rev the engine up and the light fades abit, but not completely out.. the alternator belt is fine, no slip.

What can cause an alternator to burn out?, the time span is about 12-18 months between alternator failure.

I've just ordered an new alternator, and want it to last this time...

any ideas, all appreciated..

I dont have the answer iam afraid but if it was me i'd start by checking all of the earth straps in the engine bay and then look at as much wiring as i can to see if it has rubbed through. I burnt out my laguna wiring to the brake light as the wires in the back door had worn through and were shorting. The worst it will do is waste your time if iam wrong, hopefully someone will have a better answer. HTH

Have a look on one of the Peugeot or 106 forums, sounds like it could be a common problem.

I think you are correct Richard I know of two others just the same, heavy steering as it would seem the low voltage output gives up first.
