Coolman Radiator And Rh Supplied Fan

HELP...!!!

I'm seriously loosing my rag over fitting the Coolman Rad and the RH supplied fan. I just can't seem to make them fit in my 2B.

The only way I can get the rad in is to fit it in front of the second top crossmember (viewed from the front of the car) and lean it so the bottom is up against the first bottom crossmember (not the one with the steering rack attached), i.e it leans in towards the engine. This then does make it difficult to completely fill with water

The trouble then is that I have no where suitable for mounting the fan unless I fit it to the two front crossmembers (top and bottom), which then means its quite a distance from the rad and probably won't have much effect on cooling the engine...!!

Someone please help me out of my misery...!!!! :boohoo: :gdit: :boohoo:

Thanks

T.

Hi,

Ive (we've) got a 2B s/s wishbone chassis, and we saw the same problem, The radiator cannot fit vertically, it has to lean backwards- in between the two front sqr sections. - cutting a 'U' or 'V' slot in the lower steering rack mounting section to allow the lower coolant hose to clear. ( !!wont without a slot cut out.!!)

I've mounted the fan at the very front, using little metal brackets that clamp the fan down - I've removed the original mounting points (arm bits..) off the fan shroud..

-So the fan is not directly infront of the radiator, but its impossible to achieve that, so dont worry.. - unless you get a custon smaller fan (but. £££)

gd luck

I've fitted the rad as Takumi suggests complete with notch to clear bottom hose.

You can always make up a shroud to duct the air from the fan onto the radiator.

This would consist of three panels - top & both sides.

This is what I intend doing - haven't got that far yet - therefore no pictures

From what I have heard it is better getting another fan as the RH fan is not too good (Its a sucker not a blower) Mind you I have not bothered to confirm this though.

I think we will be looking at a different fan from the scrappies it will not cost much and at least fit properly.

The radiator is another problem we think we will be seeking an alternative as the Coolman job is just not the right shape for our car. We will either get a custom built one (double depth, half the height) which will probably not cost that much from an radiator specialist, or trawl the scrappies for a more suitable one.

I've gone for the leaning rad / fan out front setup, but initally it was running really hot and if I was doing it again I'd try and squeeze the rad right into the nose cone, infront of both wishbone crossmembers, and bin the RHE fan cause it's cr*p. Sorry I can't remember who, but I'm sure someone has successfully done this.

edit: As Bill says, it may be worth going for a completely different fan/rad from a scrappy or buy new. Might seem daft dumping the brand new RH kit, but worth it in the long run.

Thanks for your reply guys.....any suggestions on what fan I could use form the scrappies...???

Also, if I decide to go for a specialist made rad, what information do i need to consider before i appraoch the relevant companies, i.e. number of cores, etc.

Cheers

Hi Joel,

you might find your cooling works better if you turn your fan around. It looks the same as mine and as it is a sucker fan what it is trying to on your car is suck air out of the rad and push it out of the nose cone. Mine is mounted the same as yours but the other way round. I checked this about 8 times before i was convinced that the air was travelling with the most force in the right direction, this meant wirining it up so it ran in both directions and testing the force of the air. If you simply run it in reverse the aerofoil design of the blades means that it pushes a lot less air. Give it a go and see what happens.

Sorry forgot to say that I have also put a ply wood "top" on as well, this goes between the Fan shroud and the Rad top tank lip to stop the air taking the lazy route over the top of the Rad. This leaves enough space for cool air to go over the top of the fan shroud to get to the pancake filter I have on my carb.

Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion - Like you I spent a while testing the fan at opposite polarities before I fitted it, and I couldn't find a noticeable difference either way. In fact someone told me at the Donnington show that it was Bi-directional, and the shape of the fins meant it worked equally both ways.

The same chap recommended re-shaping the fins with a heat gun, which I've done and it's made a slight improvement, but if you're not an expert on aerofoil design it's hard to know how to shape them. I'd still recommend replacing it for something from a scrappy, which is what I intend to do at some point over the winter.

Also fit some extra bonnet vents 'cause not only are they great at reducing under-bonnet temperatures, they look cool too. B)

I was going to wait till after SVA to fit the bonnet vents because they look like they have some loverly sharp edges to fail on!!

Still look nice though!

I went through this as well, and I mounted the radiator sloping back towards the engine, with the fan quite a way in front of it, but I boxed it all in, using galvanised steel.

Check my build diary, under September 2002 (specifically the 10th onwards) for how I did it. The fan now blows a gale, and it all goes through the radiator!

Hi, can also add that I agree with most of the above. I fitted the coolman rad angled slightly backward and it fits fairly well with a small notch removed from the bottom crossmember.

I also took a trip to the local scrappy and purcased a slim puller fan from an Nissan and this fits perfectly behind the rad and cools it perfectly. I beleive the fan may have been from a cherry or something similar, but was no more than an inch and a half to two inches deep and sits perfectly against the rear of the rad!
