3a Rear Dampers

Refitted a rear corner today and started tightening the top damper fixing which is like the one on the back of an old Mini, ie not a through bolt but a threaded end sticking straight up. How far down do i wind this? I could keep on tightening until the rubber fixings are crushed. Do I just tighten it until there is no play and then put on a locking nut?

Having played with Minis in my youth I should know but that was a long time ago!

On an exmo which has the same rear end I found out that the rubber fixings needed to be crushed otherwise they wore away quickly.
