Can You Help A Brow Beaten Hoodie?

I`ve finally got hold of a 2.0i Sierra donor so that I can replace the 1600/4 speed that`s currently propelling my series 3 RH.Unfortunately it`s got a rather unpleasant top end rattle(beggers can`t be choosers), according to my wife xmas is coming and spending money on my car is likely to affect my health, something about severe bruising, I was trying not to listen but that in it`s self is a fairly dangerous pastime, judging by the look on her face.

See wanted ad! hopefully it`s still there.

Also if anyone has a build manual/video for a series 3 I could beg, steal or borrow

that would also be a big help?

Has anyone done a swap from 4speed to 5? what problems did you encounter?

Help with any of the above greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Allan

For the top end rattles first off check the cam timing - replace the timing belt belt as a matter of course. Then check the valve clearances. If it ran in the donor it will run in the hood in just the same way!

Regarding the 1600 to 2.0i swap, the biggest difference will be the EFi stuff. You'll have a fair amount of wiring to sort out.

When changing to 5 speed, two things to know are the gearbox mount is further back and the speedo cable exit is further back as well.

RHE will have made provision for fitting a 5 speed, on my S7 there are two cutouts which can be removed, I braced across the front of the 5speed cutout to reinforce the gap left where the 4speed mount was.

With the speedo cable get hold of a 5speed cable which is longer incase the current one doesnt reach it did on my S7.

Forgot this bit, the output shaft is different. If you have a UJ you should be able to pop down your local prop specialist and get a new end for your prop fitted just a case of splitting the UJ. Good news is the length is the same for both gearboxes so no mods needed.
