Zetec Engine

Hi all another question!!

 

im a little confused, im hoping to build a zero i have bought a donor car (see donor section for pics ect) a 1990 1.6l sapphire

i dont want to use the 1.6l engine and want to fit a 1.8l/2.0l zetec engine my questions are...

 

1. can i fit any 1.8/2.0l zetec engine (age wise) ?

 

2. will i have to have a cat (this is what im trying to avoid)

 

3. i know that the best thing to do is change the engine numbers on the log book on the donor car for evidence that 'the zetec was fitted to the sierra' but where dose this leave me with emmisions? as a 1990 sierra or the age of the zetec engine?

 

4. if i just fit the zetec to the zero and have to have a 'Q plate' where dose this leave me re: emmisions? would i need a cat then?

Hi,

i believe that if the engine is before 93 then it doesnt need a cat even if it had one fitted. You would have to prove the age of the engine though. If you were to fit the standard sierra pinto as is, you would most likely get an age related plate. You can then change for anything you like at a later stage. Some would argue to do all the mods now and fit the zetec others (including me) would probably say to get it build with the pinto and get some fun out of it asap. The zetec will require lots of additional bits from what ive seen including new clutch plate, starter, new plenum possibly?, aftermarket ignition setup, sump mods (expensive as aluminium) etc

 

You probably have a type 9 gearbox on your sierra which i think needs a clutch release bearing mod as its not long enough (although i may be wrong on that one).

 

The zetec is a lovely engine but many people on here sing praises for the good old pinto, which is easy to tune and has a grunt about it. I guess it comes down to time and cost, if you have lots of both go with the zetec
