Hi

Im after a bit of advice after pushing the hood a little too hard the other day I managed to get the engine a tad hot

I would like to invest in a new rad cooling fan (the one i have at the moment is fixed onto the water pump pulley)

The only option I can see is to get a push/pull fan (but I can only use it as pull due to space) do they work ok like this ?

I will have to offset the fan to one side of the rad (again due to lack of space) is this going be ok ?

Any advice or ideas greatly recived

Many thanks Dan

They work best pulling air through

Don't see too many probs with this

If you can fit it in, try a fan from a Diesel escort. They are wuite big and heavy but certainly blow a gale.

Have you got the Sierra based S7 with inboard suspension? Is your rad in front or behind the suspension?

Running rad in engine bay of 3a (inboard suspension). Got a cheap puller shroaded fan and water hose( with fan switch hole) from RH. Cut down fan shroad till blades just mist rad fins. Mounted offset to side of rad with cable ties and foam padding (not to touch rad fins). Joined water hose to cut down cortina top hose, used a mark2 fiesta fan switch (has spade connectors). Wired up fan switch with relay and fuse across starter motor (Cuts fan on hot restart ie. stalled). Think wiring diagram is on NW HOODS site? Running a non pressurised header to a millets metal drinks bottle and push bike cage (kept melting plastic ones - can push out a bit off steam when self bleading). Hope this helps Spanner Man

As earlier replies, what Rad are you using?

If a standard Cortina one (single core) you are going to struggle no matter what fan you put in.

I tried going this route on my S7 but couldn't find a suitable fan to fit in the available space that was big enough to get the temp down. In the end I went for the Coolman Rad from GBS,and with a high pressure Rad Cap plus the standard viscous fan and no longer have any problems with cooling on my S7.

Alternatively you could try mounting a rad in the nose cone (not sure exactly what will fit but have heard VW polo or Seat Marbella ones may), and with an electric fan because you will have to mount it an an angle and may not get any 'ram' effect.

I have fitted a Seat rad in the nose wuth an electric fan behind it (but in front of the inbpoard suspension.

I have also left the viscous fan on the engine. I also run an oil cooler to try and keep the temp down.

I need to properly shroud the rad/fan and to fit vent to the bonnet/ side panels

Thanks for the replies

My s7 has the inboard suspension and the rad is behind it.

The rad is a single core (not sure wat its out of though)

I will have a look around (maybe on flee bay) and see wat other rads I can get.

Would it be worth putting a fan in the nose cone to push air through aswell ?

Cheers Dan

At any speed over about 50mph the rad fan does nothing except use power and act as an obstruction to air flow. (slightly less of an obstruction if it's spinning). So overheating when you thrash it is not due to a fan fault. Attend to efficiency of the rad itself, water flow and air flow.

I run a 2 litre pinto with a standard cortina rad behind the inboard suspension of a series III. I once drove from Bristol to Manchester on a very hot day with no fan and was fine at 70+ or indeed anything that didn't involve traffic jams.

Once back, overheating when crawling or stationary was solved by placing the biggest fan I could get behind the rad (it's actually just too big and can't fit directly to the fins of the rad, so I placed an aluminium frame and sheet over the radiator, with a circular cut-out, so all the air the fan sucks has to have come through the radiator).

Due to the proximity of the water pump to the radiator, I had to have an unusually thin fan and bought it from Europa Spares - it's only 52 mm thick - it still sits uncomfortably (to the eye) close to the pump, but it has never touched.

I fitted an electric fan but still had the problem of overheating when making the engine do any more than normal work (air temp here in Aus is a bit warm). I fixed the problem by damming any escape routs that the air could take using “pool noodles” (swimming pool toys for the kids) something like rollover bar sponge. If you take your grill off and look inside for any escape routs the air may take block it off, even the steering rack and upper suspension, and make a complete seal around the rad top tank and rear edge of the nose cone, this will make all the air entering the nose cone go through the rad. I have a telltale light wired in so I can monitor when the fan is running, before the mod it was on most of the time now it very rarely comes on and only for a very short time; could probably ditch the fan altogether. (3A with standard rad supplied with kit).
