Wiring Diagram - Nervous Breakdown Or Sell

Well it has happened.......

The wiring harness is impossible. Has anyone that has been through this living hell actually recorded the wiring requirements for a Zero with a Zetec / emerald ecu. I am at the point of wanting to bin the whole project.

Nothing fits, there are no instructions, why did I start this...........with the fancy wheels and tyres I have spent nearly £10k and I still haven't bought seats or painted the thing. I must have been mad a second hand Caterham SV would have only cost £16k and I would have been on the road immediately

Are there any companies in Scotland that sort kit cars..............I am at breaking point. Whilst I have previously defended GBS I am not so keen on them at the moment.

Please, please, please help.

Phil treat the wiring as separate bits ie engine loom should only control engine and fuel pump with pos a ignition live and an earth and a taco out put that's all my omex needs.

Sort out the lights and switches loom first working on one thing a time, I do Know that some have posted that the relays have been wired wrong on the GBS Loom.

see attached may help

Yes you will spend more cash than a second hand car but you will have built it and know it inside out, with a experience that will last for ever and a grin every time you drive it that is priceless.

Or get an auto sparks to help

We have a new company advert who are Robin Hood specialist Automotive Solutions & Racing

lots of people building Zeros will be along to help soon

Chin up

Hi Phil,

The wiring can look a bit daunting to start with but the GBS loom isn’t too bad. It’s made for the pinto lump so you will need to cut and store some wires and splice and extend some others. I spent about a week planning my wiring and about another week making a fitting the loom.

In the end I used the GBS loom for lights and low pressure pump only. I then used the ECU and high pressure pump loom from OMEX. This can be used on the Emerald, you just need to swap a few pins around on the ECU connector.

I then spliced the EBT loom in to both GBS and OMEX looms as required. My setup is OMEX ECU loom, GBS Loom, EBT Loom and I made a fan loom and relay for the Rad fan.

If you let me know what switches you will be using I can send over some of my drawings when I get home tonight.

Buy or borrow a DC bench power supply/charger to test each circuit as you go.

Buy loads of heat shrink and a good soldering iron. I used Auto Electrical Supplies for the thin wall cable.

Worst case if you PM your number I can talk you though how I have installed mine.

Cheers,

Jonny

We must have swapped - I'm from M'bro but have spent the last 20 years in Aberdeenshire.

Anyway the good news is that after last nights mini break down that I have found a local expert to guide me through the wiring and the ECU set up.............woo hoo!!!!!

So he is coming round on Sunday to have a look and a chat.

Thank you so much for your help and support ........... I will have to meet up with you when (no longer if) I complete my build.

Big thanks again

Phil

Thank you so much for your help and support ........... after last nights mini brakdown I have managed to locate a local Electrical / Engine management guru who has offered to come round and give me a hand and guide me through the process.

My good lady looked quite concerned as I was storming round the house muttering and swearing .....so perhaps an appology and a bunch of flowers might be required tonight.

Big thanks again

Phil

dont worry ive had many a breakdown over the car, its taken over my life the last week as i cant get the engine running propperly and i just cant figure out why. but ive got the whole day free and lots of stuff to check and double check! i think the thing is not to rush the car, just take your time, every thing falls into place eventually

Glad you've found someone local that can help.

We need all the Hoodies we can get in Scotland, it can get a bit dispiriting at times if there is no one near by to offer help and encouragement or even just to go and see a completed car! Thank goodness for the internet and particularly this site!

Brace yourselves for lots of questions from me, I've just been labeling up my wiring and hope to start fitting it at the weekend!

best regards

Angus

I must admit I have gone for the Westfield harness and it looks like it may not be too bad. the diagram is good and the manual shows the best way to route it. things seem to line up as they should.

Hi Phil

Did you not get the wire diagrams from GBS. I know they are for a Pinto but they go a long way to getting the right bits in the right place. I laid mine out in a basic shape then started to label each wire with a label machine, I could then pull the loom around a bit to get things to line up. Some points to remember are:

The side repeater indicators know need to be extended to go to the cycle wings for IVA

The rear fog light know has to come one with sidelights (I think).

If you are using GBS or ETB gauges you will (According to Richard) need an extra wire to the oil pressure switch and a wire to the fan controller stat. Also don't fit the conduit until it is all in place. I am no expert and have only just laid mine out and labelled, but I hope this helps. I have attatched the GBS diagrams. Will put some more in the next post due to size. Or PM me and I will e-mail them all over to you.

Hang in there your car looks great, and your blog is more upto date than mine (lost my password).

Cheers Spencer
