Zetec Clutch

I would buy a ready drilled 1.8 flywheel from Retroford in Corby. Dave Colledge is very good with RWD conversion zetec/duratec bits at reasonable prices. If you sell your two flywheels on the bay you will hardly feel the pain.

1.8 flywheel with pinto clutch into type 9 uses CCT132 (standard sierra) release bearing. (This is my current setup.)

1.8 or 2.0 flywheel with early mondeo 1.8 or 2.0 clutch uses CCT133 release bearing. You can modify the fulcrum mount of the release arm in the bellhousing. There is a pin in a bearing surface that the non cable end of the clutch arm rests on. Remove the pin, drill and tap the pin hole and fit two small nuts and bolt to provide a new locating 'pin' and a new bearing surface, the top of the nuts, 10mm forward of the old. You will need to widen the pin slot in the clutch arm.

(CCT132/3 are Quinton Hazel part numbers.)

Hi Nigel what is the reason of modifying the fulcrum mount & in what clutch configuration should this be done ie 1.8 zetec with pinto or the other.

PS. A lot of people would be lost without all the wealth of knowledge on here keep it up guys

Ah. Sit there and try to make it as unambiguous as possible and miss out basics.

Mondeo clutch on 1.8 or 2.0 zetec flywheel.

The early mondeo zetec clutches are slimline. The diaphragm fingers are further away from the gearbox. They are also thus further away from the operating surface of the release bearing. So you need to do something to bring the release bearing operating surface back to the right distance from the fingers. There are two ways. Either fit a taller bearing (the 133) or move the release arm fulcrum forward. Either/or, not both!

Pinto clutch on zetec flywheel.

The pinto pressure plate is thicker. Mounted on a mondeo flywheel it leaves the release fingers in the same position relative to gearbox and release bearing as they were in the sierra. So the sierra bearing (132) can be used just fine.

Hi can anyone tell me what year & model of 2 litre clutch to get. As I went to my motor factors today & there is 3 different types 2 hydraulic & 1 cable. the obvious choice would be the cable type, but as it is only the two plates i'm using it might be either. I'm using a lightened 2 litre 240mm flywheel.

I don't know for sure. I would guess at buying one for a 93 Mk1 mondeo 2.0 Take the flywheel with you and make sure it will fit on. Then have a look at the diaphragm fingers and make sure they are rounded. (Rounded fingers/flat surface release bearing. Flat fingers/rounded surface release bearing.

Hi Nigel,

Please can you verify because I believe from what I have, 1.8 & 2.0 Mondeo Flywheels & 2.0 cover plate and friction disc. The 1.8 is flat and the 2.0 has a well. So I would have suggested the 2.0 had the slimline clutch as its cover plate is reduced by the depth of the well. But again that is not to say that the distance from the flywheel friction plate surface to the release fingers are the same as I don't have a 1.8 clutch plate and cover.

I hope that was clear, it may help to look at the pictures I posted some way above.

Another way to express my query is to say I expect the fingers on the Mondeo 1.8 and 2.0 assemblies on intended flywheels to be the same depth into the bell housing, thus the 2.0 cover plate will be thinner than the 2.0 due to the well depth of the 2L flywheel.

My 2.0 flywheel came from a Blacktop Mondeo so it is 1/5/98 to 1/12/2000. I never saw what the hydraulic clutch bit was like.

Money doesn't grow on trees, so now you can fit the 2.0L Mondeo clutch, cover and 133 release bearing. Prior to purchasing cost the Burton or others upgraded clutch kit. Depending on your engine, the inlet and exhaust you could be 170 to 180 and even up to 200 BHP and I am given to believe the Mondeo struggles with 135BHP. If I were in your situation I might suck it and see.

Could you please post the weight of your lightened 2L Mondeo flywheel.

Good question. Looking through the QH clutch catalogue the part numbers for mondeo release bearings, 1.6,1.8 and 2.0 are all the same. Suggests that the flywheel/pressure plate package on all mondeo engines brings the diaphragm fingers to the same distance behind the back face of the block/front face of the bellhousing regardless. That suggests any early mondeo zetec, 1.6, 1.8, or 2.0 with any mondeo zetec flywheel and clutch combo off the same engine will work with the CCT133 bearing. Most Escort zetec clutches and later focus clutches are not compatible.

Hi Alan

yeah unfortunatly money doesn't grow on trees ive got a really good price for the clutch kit from my local supplier. I'm willing to try the standard clutch for now . The weight of the flywheel is 8.5kg dont know what the original dual mass one weighed.

Hi Andy

I don't think your 2L flywheel was a dual mass one. If you look again at my pictures you will see my 2L looks the same as your lightened on but without the machining., as hard as I try I can't find the dual mass bit on my flywheel thus I conclude it is a solid one. My 2L flywheel jumped on the scales at 9.8Kg.

While I was there I plopped my 1.8L on the scales and was 8.7Kg. Being disappointed that it was not lighter than yours I looked very carefully for the 200g. I conclude there is a ring in the center of the flywheel which could account for some of this, but I expected mine to be a lot lighter. Has yourd got the ring on the back between the ring gear and the timing pickup holes? I can only think that my flywheel is more dense than yours simply because I have that 45 degree chamfer on the outside.

Next I weighed the cover plates and both the 2L Zetec and the pinto were the same at 4.15Kg

Then I weighed the friction discs, @l Zetec 1.225Kg and the Pinto 0.95kg

So I think you should be smiling at the result :)

Alan

Just had another look at your picture side view, there is no rear ring to be seen. So that answers mu conundrum.

On my flywheels the ring in the back has been the sacrificial meat when the flywheel was balanced by Ford. So machining it off will require the flywheel to be rebalanced.

Alan have a look at this. This is where I got it from. the flywheel that I took of the engine was huge it must of been about 3" thick.

Hi Andy,

I think it is a very cleaver add, first I read it as the flywheel had been lightened by 7.5 Kg, but no it is said to weigh 7.5 Kg. I notice yours weighs in at 8.5 Kg.

The auction for your part is closed but it has a link to this below, which is exactly what I found on mt 2L Blacktop, years correct to fit.

I don't want to say too much as this is a public forum. I hope Nigel makes a comment on the part numbers.

I guess the racing car was a rear engine rear wheel drive machine, so it used the Zetec E engine and the MTX75 gearbox and yes they had clutch problems. The solution was to ditch the 1.8L flywheel (no room for Pinto plate) and use the 240mm 2L clutch which means the 2L flywheel had to be used and thus it needed to be lightened and yes a special clutch at #175 evolved.

Andy, I have a question. If you were starting again would you go the same route? Ebay 1.6L Zetec E (Same as 1.8L) flywheel #15 and I think the pinto clutch Assy is less than the Zetec range.
