Speedo Cable

Hi Pete

Just read your post and was wondering why you needed a new cable? My superspec broke the speedo cable on the first run - cable broke at the tight radius near the gearbox.

My solution was to fit an angle drive (from Speedograph). It cost a lot more than I wanted to pay, but has fixed the problem.

If you're getting quite a lot of miles out of each cable, then probably not necessary for an angle drive, but may be something to bear in mind if you have any future problems.

Cheers

James

Hi James

This is exactly where the problem was. Rather than fit an angle drive to reduce the sharpness in the bend, I have done a little grinding to the brackets.( Both of the rubber gearbox mounts had sheared too, these were replaced,)

Unfortunately when I came to fit the replacement cable to the gearbox I could not replace the circlip due to the fact that the trumpet fitting on the end of the replacement cable was not as deep as on the original.(although external dimensions are the same.)

I have been to another Ford agents and still get the same reply (COMPUTER SAYS NO).

They cannot help without the exact model and year of the car to which the cable was originally made for.

I am sure one of our club members has this info.

Thanks for your reply

Peter

Peter have you got a freindly motor factor near by ?

If you have pop round and see what they can do for you.

Take your old cable and see if they can match it like for like.

Thanks for the drink Pete, it wasn't necessary as glad to help out & move on some thing that would have probably hung on workshop wall for ever.

Hi Bob

Thanks again for posting the cable.

On Sunday I set about fitting it. Started by fixing to clock, 5mins perfect .

Threaded cable around car to gearbox, 15mins easy.

Connect cable to gearbox and fix with circlip, !*%"!?&%""!!*ard impossible.

It turns out that the internal depth of the trumpet fitting on new cable was less than that on the original.

Have been back to Ford who still say (COMPUTER SAYS NO). Without part numbers or model and year info they are U/S.

Thanks again for your help

Peter.

Pete, the cable I sent you had Ford Nos. on the outer, would that narrow the search? If Sylvia hasn't banked your cheque I'll tear it up; & you can leave the cable hanging on YOUR workshop wall for someone else.

Don't you dare!

Get down the pub and have a drink.

I feel guilty about telling you now, but I knew you would be interested.

At least 6people have looked for part nos, yet to find.

Thanks again

Peter

Ian, I went to yet another Motor factor today, what a difference. He made a phone call asked if he could keep the cable for matching, took my number to keep me informed.

Fingers crossed it may be COMPUTER SAYS YES.

Thanks

Peter
