Hi Pete

The speedo should read correctly if you keep the same rolling dia of wheels,

the Temp gauge needs the white sender in the engine block(clocks and gauges need correct senders they have a colooured band around them), to check the gauge is okay, earth the wire on the engine it should go straight to max.

For the fuel gauge, you either need to bend/shorten the arm in tank to read someware near (i doubt it will read correctly with sierra float) or mk 2 escort one is said to be close after moding.

Tee piece available from shows or Merlin motorsport,Burtons, demon thieves.

Hello.

It's strange that you should bring up this subject as I was going to ask about a problem I've got with my Capri speedo fitted to a 2b.

I fitted the Capri clocks about two years ago, I assumed that the speedo would be a direct replacement due to the fact the Capri & Sierra use the same gearbox and same wheel diameter.(post 83)

I have been out on convey jorneys in the past two years but always one of the followers or leading one other that didn't have a speedo working at the time.

When I lead a group to Detling recently I was told that my speedo was reading 20mph out. After following the wife in the tintop it seems that it may be 10mph out.

I dont beleive the clocks are from a 2.8 because they have a 4 cyclinder rev counter.

So my only thoughts are the speedo is u/s or maybe was fitted to a pre 83 Capri that I beleive had a different Gearbox to the Sierra.

Any comment welcome.

Has anyone got a set of Capri clocks they want to sell so I can try a different speedo.

Hi Piddy

My capri clocks were reading under at the SVA, by ten MPH .

This was consitant through all speeds, i hadnt checked before as the car was only finished (loose term always modding) the night before the test.

All i did was remove the needle and move it up by ten mph (was reading below zero at rest) and set the needle at zero.

At the retest the examiner just said it was fine, after a delay of what seemed ages, the barstool was building the tension before he said "right thats the end of the test i will go and fill out the pass certificate"

so im not sure it was spot on but i was followed by a gent from Chorley who said i was doing 90mph (on a private road of course), on its first run out after test, and it was what the speedo said i was doing.

Cant check now because they're in another 2b unless Ian007 can check for us.

I have a 3a ,2 litre 5 speed,diff and 5 speed box from same car,

wheels are 185/60 14",with Capri clocks fitted at SVA

my speedo was spot on.

the readings were....

speedo actual

35 34

40 39

50 48

60 57

70 67

Mitch is quite correct,to get temp guage to work ,you need a white

top sender,

Also my fuel guage is useless,it reads 3/4 when full, then drops to zero

after 10 litres or so,......the tank is 40 litres capacity. This is a major problem

that I need to resolve,I need an accurate guage, as I cant be asked working

out fuel used by mileage.

If anybody knows were I can get a sender and guage which will work

accurately ,I'd be much obligued.

Cheers Ian

Chaps the problem may be although you have the same gearbox and wheel size as the Crapi you haven't got the same axle! check out the diff ratios. I had a spread sheet on the old site you could download and put in the variables to get speed from engine revs. I can post it on if you can't find it.

My clocks are about as much use as a leper at the athletics.

The rev counters out, the fuel and temp guage act as voltmeters, the ammeter isnt wired up and neither is the oil press. (Half a job see).

As to the speedo, i think its fairly accurate. The only reason i know this as last week when i broke down in the middle of nowhere in pissing rain, my dad towed me home on a rope (scary) and reckoned he did 30 through our village - i had 30 on the clock....

My back axle is from a 1600, but absolutley EVERYHTING on the donor suggested the engine bay should have had a 2000 in there - brakes, fittings etc etc.

The rev counter was okay when fitted to mine, speedo passed sva.

Fuel gauge never read correctly, i always went off mileage.

If you have fitted the white temp sender that should also be correct.

Sorry if theres a fault some where, but if you return it undamaged in original packaging, i will give you a full refund
