2b Front Suspension - Sliding Pillar

As a buyer rather than builder (well I couldn't get a kit with the all singing dancing titanium coated model being introduced !) I now need to remove the cycle wing bracket as it has cracked!

I am guessing I need to compress the spring, slide the top end out and hey presto (well remove a couple of nuts!) and the support plate will be removable !

Any tips as the prospect of springs scares me !

Thanks for any tips !

Andy

Andy , what so say is basically correct, but take lots of care, use good spring compressors, always point it away from your head, and a second pair of hands will come in handy. Mine was a bugger to build, and I had it off again three times before I finished.

There was a second video issued about assembling these units, as some builders were getting it wrong.

If you live near me I will come and help. where are you ?

Cheers for the offer - things have progressed as always !

My Dad decided to have a quick look while I was at work today - I now have a dismantelled suspension and seperate plate ! - Well the plate is cracked into 3 pieces ! (I will get a pic!)

Next to get a new one fabricated ! - Hopefully work willl be able to cnc punch and bend then I just need the "conduit" bending and welding.

Then a reassembly - Dad has left me some descriptions but biggest thing was he only managed to get 1 compressor on because of the layout of the suspension!

Anyway I will get the bracket fabricated and let you know how it goes !

Back to rewiring the cooliing fan now !

Andy

PS I am from Stafford

Do you mean adding some weld to the inside edge of the backet ?

I was wondering about having some "wings" folded into the bracket to add extra support.

I dont know what has happened to my bracket but I will be taking a good look at the near side as well ! - See below for the completly fractured bracket!

Hi Andy,

this is a common problem.

My first (RHE original) broke at 500 miles.

You need to fabricate strengthening plates to stop the plate flexing.

First, I used triangular plates alongside the horizontal plate, & welded to the

tube. This lasted 5000 miles.

Now I have made up an inverted U shaped bracket, which bolts to the

McP strut pinch bolt, and welded that to the bottom of the tube.

No flex at all, so I am optimistic.

A longer term fix is to bend up a much longer tube into a U,, shape &

fit a bracket at the centre bottom to bolt to the bottom ball joint,

and a bar fitted to the pinch bolt, & fixed to the vertical tube, which bends over

to fit underneath the cycle wings.

(Idea seen on a few 7s at Stoneleigh, different makes)

Bob.

Thanks for all the advice Guys

I will get a pic soon but managed to get some brackets fabricated (useful working where they do sheet metal design (amongst othr things!)) out of 3mm steel with integral "wings"

Would make a tad wider next time (spring tight on the sides of the wings) but I can't complain !!

Now to move the tonne of gravel mr Jewson decided to place so I cant get the kit out of the drive !
