Strange Engine "sealant"? Tin Top

went to have a look at a shopping car for SWMBO today which was a very neat and tidy Nissan Tino, 1 lady owner (before the car sales place took charge of it) 50k miles, FSH blah blah blah!.

Only thing I didnt like about it was this gold/yellow varnish/sealant all over the engine, water pipes, intake etc. It could be scraped off with your finger nail.

Any ideas what this is? and is it a bad sign?

New cars come with a wax coating to protect them on their way to the dealers, has this not been removed ??? Also some places that offer a valet service will sometimes laquer the engine and after a while it seems to crack and peel off ??

I had a diesel tino for 10 years, great alround car, take all back seats out (undo 6 clips to remove them) & its like a van
