Zetec Thermostat Housing Clearance

How much clearance is needed to run a blacktop without a water rail? I've measured and my bellhousing seems to sit nearly 3 inches further out than my bulkhead. Will I have enough clearance for the standard thermostat housing? I've searched and can't seem to find any info.

3" sounds a bit tight to me can you move gearbox a little bit got to move mine

That's what I'm trying to avoid, also after looking at my bulkhead trimming a couple of inches off shouldn't be a huge issue.

I'll measure mine tonight, a club hammer should provide adequate relief on the bulkhead

The thermostat is exactly 3 inches deep!

I might just get away with it then! I'll have to measure tomoz to be sure and see what extra space could be gained with a hammer if needs be, ideally no hammer needed as I'm hoping to keep it all near and tidy.
