Tin Top Transmission Mounts?

Sorry to ask a none Kit related question....But

I have a KIA Sorento 2.5 CRDi XS 2006 and since being at the Stoneleigh kit car show, I have noticed the gearstick shakes erratically (not quite jumping out of gear....yet)

It seems to be when the car is in standing still (neutral or in gear) and the revs are at tick over.

Could this be the engine or gearbox mounts are shot?

Once the car is moving or the revs are above 1500 the engine/gearbox settles and the stick is more sturdy (as normal).

Can I check this theory by supporting the engine with a jack etc...

Any advice appreciated.

TIA Dino & Nikki

From what I can remember and if I am thinking of the right car, the rear of the engine is really bad for access. Even the filter change is awkward.

You are thinking along the right lines about the mounts. It is possible to jack under the engine but take great care. Use a thick piece of wood to spread the load on the jacking point.

Another cause of your symptom could possibly be the drive shaft bearing where it goes across the back of the engine. Justcheck by holding it near to the bearing and try it for play. If it's that, good luck cos thems a reet bloody bugger t do.

All the best mate. See you come month end. Ken

Does the gearstick move when travelling and foot on and off the throttle? If this happens then it could be mountings, not sure if this vehicle has a transverse engine and gearbox or inline. If it only happens at idle then have you got an engine misfire causing the engine to shake? Diesel engines are normally quite smooth at idle these days due to electronic control so unusual to have a mounting problem at idle which has suddenly developed. I know that inline engines in Hyundai terracan's which is a very similar model to yours have problems with leaking injectors. They leak around the base where they seal into the head this causes a misfire and the engine to shake at idle but appears ok when underload. HTH Gary

The gear stick has lots of play and vibration all the time, but very noticeable when the is stationary and at tick over.

When we accelerate the gear stick becomes more stable and when under-load or at high speeds seems OK.

Just finding it hard to differentiate if its the mountings or the drive shaft causing the issue.

I will try to get some footage of it and the engine over the weekend for you to look at.

  • 4 weeks later...

OK, Car has been in garage to see what was really wrong (as the mounts were fine).

Seems the revs are very low and causing the engine to sound awful, car is very under powered and the gear stick is still shaking.

Put the diagnostic computer on it and the outcome is:

This all seems to be down 2 of the injectors are leaking and they all should be replaced.

4x diesel injectors pipes and labour +VAT.....quoted a grand total £2000....

Just going to sulk for the next week (as it was my kit car money). :(

Meantime, I will be hunting around for more quotes (as I know I can at least get the injectors cheaper than the dealer prices)

not all injectors need setting to the computer.

Take every number off the injectors and only get the exact same.

ie Ford say you must have your injectors coded in to the ecu. None sence, changed two on a focus today. No problem, started strait away, no smoking, idles correct, HP fuel side all as should be.

Was told this from the foreman at a local dealers. I used to use him with all the older MAN kit.

If you know which injectors are faulty, just buy the two you need for now. Won't hit the pocket too hard that way.

It took time to find the exact correct type but found two in the end. Second hand they were at £25 each. Well that's what my neighbour told me.

Don't despair Dino lad.

Don't use a main dealer just good money after bad, there must be a diesel specialist near to you.

There are two or three here in Lincoln and am sure would do it for less than half that quote.

Yep...been recommended a diesel specialist locally and he has quoted me half the price (at the most) and will also link up his computer and assess if all 4 really need replacing.

If not, then he would only recommend changing what is required ( no point changing what is not broken) unless we really want all 4 doing at the same time.

Even better.... he can squeeze us into his schedule early next week.

Good news Dino.

Injectors are not as they were. It's no longer week springs, worn nozzles or any other of the simple to cure things.

Electronics and much greater pressures are the main cause of problems now.

No point changing all. Just in case.

Imagine owning a 6 cylinder Merc.

£1000 quid each. Even they only change the faulty ones.

Sulk over and the bill was a lot cheaper than originally quoted.

Required diagnostics, 1x new injector, couple of hours labour and resetting the CPU to get pressure and ignition stable.

Car now runs like a dream again and sounds a lot better - big test will be towing the van this weekend.

Absolutely bizarre how 1 faulty injector can make the car run so badly and affect the gearstick and movement of the transmission\engine.

Ian/Shaft (....I must make sure I get them the right way around):

Should have a little more grip and revs when reversing the van next time and less stalling.

Also shows you guys have a highly tuned ear when listening to the engine (Stoneleigh).

All advice from everybody appreciated.

Used to happen all the time, usually by "Hotel" management.
