Newby - £3.5k budget, Registration query

Hi guys I'm on the lookout for a Robin Hood or Tiger, ideally after anything around £3.5k and 2.0 litre or above, something to use couple times a week maybe some track use but mainly whizzing around country lanes!

Question is a few I've seen are registered under the donor cars, is this legal and correct? Cannot seem to find much up to date info on DVLA requirements. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for links - forigive ignorance but the option of ‘apply to keep original registration’ is that not keeping the registration number of the donor vehicle?

So all kit cars must have passed an IVA test so require paperwork for that?

That option requires using the original unmodified chassis (car or light van), monocoque bodyshell (car or light van) or frame (motorbike) of the donor vehicle, which no seven type car does. In fact there are very few kit cars that do that, most common would the be the Z3 and MR2 based body kit style kit cars.

All kit cars that dont meet the requirements for keeping the original registration require an IVA and have been put on the road since 1st January 2000 require an IVA (or its predecessor SVA)  Cars put on the road before that still need the registration updating to show the correct make and model and if it wasnt done at the time will most likely now need to go through IVA.

Cars that have been through IVA wont have paperwork to say they have been as this is submitted as part of registration and not returned, however, the car will show the correct make (Robin hood, tiger, etc) on the V5 or when doing a reg check on the .gov site.
