Petrol Filler Neck

Hi

The short piece of tube is meant to be used instead of the sierra filler neck. It fits into the tank using the large sierra gommet.

You shold have also got a steering rack gaiter in the kit. This is meant to be the filler hose. I actually tested mine before I fitted it by soaking it in petrol to see if it would dissolve or soften. It didn't so I used it.

I made a packing piece as well to fit behind flanged tube. I used high density polypropalene sheet which I got from Here. I've got a .pdf template if you need it which I made so that you can drill out the correct shape to fit around the cap using a 17mm drill and a 49mm hole cutter.

I'll post a picture, once I've found my cammera.

Jim,

Thanks for that I was wondering what use that gaiter was :-). I had already bought the flexi from Europa.

Macc I got 9 inches and have the small RH tank looks just about right.

Have to say I didn't have any confidence in using that cheap and nasty steering gaiter as a fuel filler tube. Anyone actually used this and passed SVA?

If it's ok then why are we all paying a quid an inch for 'proper' stuff when that old gaiter will do the trick?

Sorry but I'll pay a tenner for peace of mind anyday. :(

Guys, I have spent all day today sculking around the Milton Keynes scrap yard scene, in the pouring rain, trying to sort out this tank filler problem :boohoo: I have been fiddling with this petrol tank and gommits for 2 weeks now. But at last I have found the problem. The ford fillers and grommits are differant sizes deepending on year of manufacture, etc. I have 2 fillers with the same filler profile, but the bit that goes into the grommit is a differant size on each. On one spout, there is a Dia of 49.5 and on the other filler 50.5mm- 'That is the the engineer in me coming out'. The same with the grommits, they are differant sizes to accept the correct filler hose. :)

So there you have it; get the larger grommit and filler neck and assemble it on the robin hood tank; then get a thin Jubilee clip, the sort that fits the rubber hose to an air intake on a new injection car,55mm Dia 6 mm width, should do it.

I assembled this lot and found to my great relief it does not leak, so I am well pleased.

Thanks for all your help and info. :)

Ps, does anyone know why my car has a flat spot when you throttle up. I have 2.0l pinto and a dgav weber, all are in good condition. I have been fiddling with the idle circuit which has helped but not cured it completely.

advice on the timing bfore tdc would be a start as I hve it set at 6 degrees for a piper fast road cam.

Sorry, I dont have the year dates for the spouts. But the one thing I can tell you is the small grommit is far to small to do any thing with. I can get you he exact sizes of the parts if you want.

Mine 2B passed its SVA with the steering gaiter. Its made from a polyester elastomer which is resistant to hydrocarbons and therefore there shouldn't be any problems. There's just as many leak paths after all.

It actually works quite well as you can get a much tighter bend with it than you can with fuel filler hose.

mine is a 2001 2b kit and came with locking plastic sierra filler cap so i had to start from scratch and this is what i came up with

aerocap.jpg

aero filler cap £70 - ouch but nice and slim, no edge worries at test and non leaking

fillerpipe.jpg

2 inch petrol pipe with 90 degree bend and a tank flange to connect to the tank £20 for each.

fixed the flange to the tank with self tappers and a good dose of chemical metal.

because the filler, sender and flange are all air tight i put a breather through the sender to allow air into the tank as fuel level drops using a piece of 8mm copper pipe and a modified one way valve from a brake bleed kit and some more chemical metal

all parts are from merlin motorsport but are available from other sources
