Battery Cut Off Quey From New Zealand

Hello :)

I enjoy this site a lot.I surfed in here after a week of searching for info regarding a question I have.

I have 1964 Ford Zephyr Mklll V8 which I use in the odd hill climb. Now for open days a Battery cut off is not needed here, but I like one as we mostley all do.I installed mine in the Hot postive battery side as a lot of sports ask that worldwide.I run a Ford escort internal reg alernator with the big power line out of it going to the factory remote engine bay mounted starter/solenoid post (opposite the post that has the main ign key wires). The solenoid is like (I think) a mini one.Anyway the kill switch does not shut the car off as some people at events overseas test for, the car runs on...(I would not like it too).I guess its from the alternator feeding the ignition system. Now I think (Maybe) I have 3 options:

1,Intall the switch in the earth - cable instead?

2,Move the alternator main feed to the battery side of the kill switch instead of the now solenoid side of the master switch.

3,Install a bigger multi terminal master switch with lots of wire running to the master switch.

Comments from people who have done this? Some companies sites tell to move the alternator main feed to the battery side of the master switch as in 2,

Surely that stops the power travelling but does any damage happen?

I would be VERY interested in your comments!

Coming at your concerns from a slightly different direction the switch is only used after the occurence of an 'incident'. The obvious scenario is that the car has had an off and the driver is unable to switch off the ignition due to car damage or driver damage. Cue nearest marshall to do the honours. You have to be 100% sure that it is effective and the possibility that it might damage the alternator doesn't matter spit!

As the purpose of the switch is to absolutely kill the cars electrics and stop the engine you can make a case for 2 or 3, and 3 seems the more elegant solution.

Hi Karl welcome to the site. This subject was raised quite recently click here and someone (I can’t remember who) found this click again But this dose use a multi pole switch. I had one of the single pole type on a road going car at one time and as you say the alternator keeps the engine going, blow any light bulbs that are on and eventually wreck its self. The single pole type is fine on stock cars and other small oval racers where the alternator is normally dispensed with.

yeah thats my car wiring there - the reason the car runs on is because you have to have the switch kill two circuits -

a. the main battery positive wires

b. the coil 12v+

the 3rd is a circuit which becomes live on killing the car this then uses a huge resistor to protect the alternator from being fryed on killing the car

:D Thanks guys, Here is what I was told by a sparky over here,

1,A two pole master switch on the postive hot side with the main feed of the internal reg alternator going to the battery side would work but could blow things as you have all said,

2, the switch in the earth side would still blow things,

3, the above two methods work if you have to use it and don't mind repairing the diodes which in the lucus prince of darkness brand of alternator are among the cheap ones (his comment) to repair. I must say I prefer this model alternator as its tidy for engine swaps and compact/cheap here.

The Multi terminal cut off master switch is $NZ88 which is not bad vs importing one which I looked at.The plans you have here will be very handy thank you, and after searching everywhere, this site gave me my answers :)

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Any other comments?

Thanks Terry!

Thats the exact one I got! Its over $50 in NZ money and the last UK company I got a on site quote for this part was that again for postage! (all up over $100NZ) so I'm happy to find it here, more so if I have any problems down the track.Summit are good to deal with but unless its over $100US its not worth the handling and mail costs as they are often more than the item. From another US company I was quoted $90US postage on a small die grinder for port poslishing yet a family friend sent a HUGE Lego carton to New Zealand for $20US! someone is getting very rich somwhere.Often I get parts from Australia as its cheaper than local lol.

Thanks very much for all the help guys!

Above is My car, like all our cars they are always changing! I use a lot of old tech from the 60's and Ford approved mods from the day as well.On site theres a part 2 as well.I made the Galeforce web site up as no one really had tech on them on the net.I have met some great people from the UK and around the world.

The car has only done the odd hill climb on tar-mac with the local sports car club open days.Traction is a killer as I run B/stone 331 205/60/14" which while sticky are not too wide.I am against factory modded V8 Falcons and Holdens plus kit cars etc so its more about people seeing a car their Mum and Dad drove:)

I get 14teens in the quarter with wheel spin in the first two gears, the box is a w i d e 3 speed with 3rd 1 to 1 and 4th 30 overdrive.I need a LSD and are installing a 4 spider centre from a Transit as the 2 spiders heat up and stick to the cross pin then split :(

Thanks for making me so welcome , I've posted another question or two as well!

Karl.
