  1. Thanks for that. That explains a lot. He sent me home to get my SVA certificate ( a round trip of 30 miles ) on going back I reported to the office who then issued me with my mot cert. Over here all our mot centres are government run and not private garages as in the rest of the uk. At the time the inspector asked me if the car had done its sva in England or Northern Ireland. He said if its done in Northern Ireland it is a requirement that it has mph & kph. Fortunately for me mine was done in England. Even though I have put my car through 8 mots this is the first time I have had this problem. It just means that I will have to bring my sva with me in future for every mot. Don't you just love bureaucracy. :acute:

  2. I put my Robin Hood through the MOT yesterday, in Northern Ireland. This is my eighth MOT with this car, it was turned down on one point my speedo was calibrated in MPH only, and should have been in MPH and KPH. Has anyone had experience of this. I believe this must be a Northern Ireland thing.

  3. Hi Speedy Cables have offered to sell me a kit to install the guage for £40. I'm worried now because of the reference to needing a transducer from a Jag, will I need this as well as the kit or instead of. Help.

  4. Looks like a Jag XJ6 one to me. Indicator warning lights are in the speedo and the rev-counter so you've just got the right hand indicator light and one of the other warning lights in there.

From memory it's a fairly crude way of doing a leccy speedo - it's actually a cable speedo with a motor on the rear that is spun at a varying speed to make the gauge work. They might have gone to a stepper motor on the later ones in which case you are short of a bit of logic to make it work.

I'd be interested to see what it says on the rear of the round bit on the back (the red and silver? sticker). Something like ELREMCO.... Might gove some clues.

Hi Iain, please see attachment. Colinpost-3164-039044700 1279563505_thumb.jpg

  5. A picture of the face of the gauge might be more identifiable. Manufacturers name should be on there. Colours look like British Standard 1983

I think its a Smiths guage, but there is no manufacturer name on it, just a number ES 1100-02 and MADE IN UK. Any idea what car its from ? Colin.post-3164-069158900 1279492277_thumb.jpg

  6. Hi, I bought this electronic Speedo off Ebay, but I don't know the wiring connection. Does anyone know what car its from ? The connector is seven pins, but four are used on warning lights( indicators etc ) the remaining three are coloured Black, Green, and Yellow. I contacted Speedy Cables and they have sent me a wiring colour coding, but their colours don't match the ones on this guage. I have attached a picture ( I think) of the back of the guage. Thanks in advance for any help.

  7. Hi, My car is due its MOT in a couple of months, I have MG gauges in my dash. I have been told I will fail the MOT as my speedo shows only MPH and not KPH as well. This is in Northern Ireland, has anyone else had this?

  8. I'm not sure you need them longer than 50mm.

Are you using nuts welded to your roll bar or threaded tube? I used the tube on my S7 (similar construction to your car) and the bolts didn't come through. The SVA examiner just wanted to be sure that there was a substantial proportion of thread to thread contact (about 3/4 of the length if I remember correctly).

As far as the metric / imperial problem - if the metric ones are good for motorsport then they should be good enough for road use.

Best advice is to speak to the tester at your local IVA Centre and ask what will be acceptable ( assuming this is the reason for your query).

Attached is a pic of my seatbelt mounts

Thanks for the advice, but on my car the seatbelt mounting points are on the cross member directly behind the seats. The bar is 50mm thick, and was ok for the 3 point harness, but I am up grading to 4 point, which uses snap on connections. The original mounting point is a welded tube in the cross member, but not threaded, the original bolt was 10mm and this tube will take a unf size, but it needs to be greater than 50mm so I can put a nut on the other end. I can't believe I am the only one with this problem.

  9. Sorry, I think I'm missing something here. I'm fitting 4 point harness, with the snap on connections. With the unf eye bolt the thickness of the eye is 8mm, which is the maximum thickness the snapon will take. If I use a 10mm eye nut on a M10 bolt, it wont fit. A unf eye bolt shaft is aprox 10mm. To get an ordinary eye bolt to fit the seat belt connector, it would have to be 8mm which would have an 8mm shaft, which would'nt be acceptable to sva. Hope I have explained that, and you can see my problem. Thanks.

  10. Hi, I know this is an old chestnut , and has been covered many times, but can anyone tell me were I can get UNF 7/16 eye bolts that are longer than 50mm? My roll bar is 50mm thick, so I need something like 65mm or more. Or I could go for a UNF 7/16 eye nut, but still need the name of a supplier. Its the one thing now thats holding me back from the road. Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

  11. Hi all, Thanks for the advice, I think I will play safe and stick to the liquid additives, and save myself £30 to boot. Without stripping the engine, is there any other way to know if its been converted to run on unleaded. I have been on a couple of long runs ( 100 miles + ) with no additive, but no sign of 'pinking'. If it has been converted and I put in an additive what will the effect be? Thanks

  12. Hi, I'm running a 2L pinto, which to the best of my knowledge ( limited ) has not been converted to unleaded. On ebay I see a company selling what looks like 8 metal beads in a net bag, that replaces any liquid additive. This is suppose to last 100,000 miles. It seems too good to be true, has anyone used this or know anything about it. Before I part with my hard earned cash, any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  13. Hi, I would like to change my sierra type speedo for individual clocks, preferably smiths, my hood is a 2L with 5 speed gearbox, what do I have to look out for? I have seen an mgb speedo on ebay, looks good, but will it work? Also just a thought, how do I stand legally, if I buy a secondhand with lower mileage than my original, is this classed as ' clocking ' the speedo? just a thought.

  14. Hi, I have a standard seat belt fitted to my hood, and wish to upgrade it to full harness. At present I have 2 floor mountings, and the third is on the cross member of the roll bar directly behind the seat at head level. I don't want to drill another 2 holes per seat in this bar, so I am looking for a full harness with 3 point fixing. The problem is all the 3 point harnesses I find have a long strap at the top, which look as if at their very shortest adjustment would still be too long. Can I use a 4 point harness but have the top 2 fixings on the one bolt? Or does anyone know a supplier of a three point harness with no elongated top/back fixing? Thanks for any help that might come.

  15. They are from early ones, 1968ish onwards till the late 70's I think.

Best bet is to order some from GBSC - they have them on the shelf and not expensive.

Thanks Andy, Sorry but I'm new to this game, GBSC ? I just googled them and got Great Britain Ice Hockey Supporters Club.

  16. Firstly let me thank you for your help in curing my negative camber, great job. Next problem, My 3 series 2B has just failed its mot yesterday on a suspect front top offside ball joint. The history of my car is almost unknown, believed to be a 1987 sierra 2L donor. Problem is, what is the top ball joint from? I have been to Ford garages, and independants and told it could be off a Transit van. Any help would be much appreciated, I'm new to this, the summer is slipping away, and I hav'nt been out in my car since I bought it. Help.

  17. Hi , I have a Robin Hood with serious negative camber on the rear wheels. I have been told ' Taper Plates ' can cure this, does anyone know where I can get these, or know any info about them. I'm new to this game ,so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
