  1. hi, thats kinda what i was thinking. Top speed is not a prob for me as i prefer acceleration to top speed and as you say i imagine its pretty windy at higher speeds. I think its time to get my engine tuned properly. As for loosing the ability to see i find returning from the sva test in a very heavy rain storm with no roof has a similar effect on vision albeit a little wetter. i also learnt that windscreen wipers don't work on the inside of the windscreen thanks for the info.

    Sva Passed Today!

Hi, i hassled them (in a nice way) to get registered as my insurance with osbornes and sons only lasted 2 weeks !!! from the date i started which included the sva test. I managed to get past sva in 1 week. failed on the thursday - booked for retest the next wednesday and thankfully passed. Went to DVLA on that friday and filled in lots of stuff and booked inspection for the next thursday (the chap only worked on thursday in the office at bristol) had to attach an extra chassis number as i only had a riveted plate which wasn't good enough, so i got a garage to inspect and stamp a form to say it had been done. Returned the form on the friday and then had to wait til the next wednesday to get the reg number. so all in it took 21 day/3 weeks from start of sva to on the road. thankfully the insurance had got my address wrong so i managed to wangle that extra week with no probs as i couldn't register without certificate. If you have your chassis number attached correctly and your insurance cert then you should be able to get it sooner. the chap at bristol didn't really look at much and was stone faced and had little interest in the car, hope you get someone better. He checked the engine number and the chassis number and that was about it but asked about the axles etc being from the seirra. I can't understand why vosa couldn't do a check at the sva test time to say that the car is new/age-related or Q plate so we don't have to pay a grumpy man at dvla with a torch to inspect my car for 5 mins. rant over Hope that helps, feel free to ask if you need anything else.
  3. Hi , ive got a standard 1.6 pinto with vv weber carbs how fast, theoretically, should my car be? at the moment i think my timing is out as iam finding it difficult up hills and its not that easy to get to 70mph. I realise its an old heavy engine but surely in a car as small as this it should be pretty quick? anybody have 0-60 times for a standard 1.6 as a rough guide?. I read that the original seirra did 107mph top speed so surely it should be easier to reach higher speeds with less weight than the ford. thanks

    Sva Passed Today!

congrats, i passed recently too. Just wanted to remind you to make sure you have the chassis number stamped somewhere permenant (if you haven't already) as i forgot and ended up going back and forth to the dvla with bits of paper etc, which was a good excuse to drive the car but not really where i wanted to end up each time oh the dvla man is far more scary than the vosa guys if you ask me. I wasn't sure that he was going to give me an age related plate till the last minute, don't worry though he did in the end. have fun driving
  5. Thanks everyone, i can't remember the chaps name who did the test but he was the bearded biker guy. Very nice guy, extremely helpful i found. It was nice that he was genuinely interested in my car and wanted to help get it past. As noted this was my first post as i haven't really been on the site before. I kind of went my own way with the build, maybe why it took so long. But it does mean that i don't have an aligator bonnet as i cut the bonnet and built a fixed scuttle and nose cone. Made my own panel behind the seats as it didn't fit as well as i wanted and a few other bits that i wasn't too happy with. I certainly think now that robin hood builders can certainly say they really did build the car!!! respect to everyone who builds one PS. Congrats Dave on your pass, now you have to deal with the less than helpful dvla
  6. Hi everyone, just added another 2b to the road. Passed on 30th may on 2nd attempt after mainly silly sharp edges. For all those about to go through with the wishbones i found i failed on the nut on the top wishbone that holds the balljoint but a couple of squash balls cut and siliconed round did the job. Also a fantastic cover for the front shock and bottom mounting was the heater duct from the sierra which fits perfectly around the coil and has a shape that is almost made to cover the bottom mounting bracket. just got to get the engine running right as iam not breaking 85mph at the moment. How fast should i 1.6 go? (not that i'd do it on the road) It only took 5 years but worth it.
