Pinto Oil

What oil is best for a 2.0 Pinto on Twin 40's? I have seen some nice 20/50 Classic oil in Halfords, is this any good?

Also is the Aldon Ignitor distributor conversion good?

Thanks

Spencer,

20/50 is best in pintos. I use cheap and chearful 20/50 from a local motor factors. By the time I have done 6000 miles the oil seems to be as clean as a whistle. Perhaps something to do with topping up a pint every 1000 miles or so.

Yes 20/50 is what the engine is supposed to run on but don't spend lots on so called Classic which you are likely to throw away in 12 months time after very little use (very few kits do more than 5000 a year and most do less than 2000). Do as Simon says and buy from your local factors. Also 10/40 is ok as well as I assume the engine had a rebuild pre fitting in the kit and it has good oil pressure (I suspect Ford would have specified 10/40 for the Pinto had it been around when it was designed)

I've had the Aldon Ignitor on my 2b for the last 2 and a half years with no problems at all. Done around 10,000 miles in that time. It's easy to install, easy to set up and gave me much more reliable tickover and smoother running compared to the points.

Halford 20w50 Classic fir me, gives a little more pressure for those high revving moments.

Would also recomend the high capacity/high pressure pump over just a high pressure one.

I have fitted Megajolt to 3 Pintos now (MAP) and have a TPS version waiting for me to fit with a set of R1 carbs.

I've changed engines more frequently than that.

3000 miles was the recommended for the Pinto years ago, you can get away with longer if you change the filter at that interval and the oil still looks clear.

6000 is the ford schedule pretty much like most pre 90's cars

Also in the small print it recommends changing the oil regardless of milage at an interval usually 6 months.

Changing the oil and filter once a year for the average kit cars not bad really

I use the Halfords Classic 20/50 as well. Last time bought some I was told it is the same as Duckhams 20/50 from days gone by. Certainly the same green colour that I remember. The top end is definately quieter than with a 10/40, and given the issues with Pinto camshafts..............
