Go for the 2l Zetec. With throttle bodies & custom Map should be good for 160-170bhp out the tin & at no more expense.

Not sure why Westfield use the 1800, seems silly to me...

I think it goes back to the crossflow days when an 1800 was the dogs danglys.

I have spoken to two different westfield owners recently who have mistaken my 2B for a westie (how the 2B is clearly better looking). They asked the engine size and on hearing 2 litre asked why everyone was using 2 litres now and what was wrong with 1800.

Nope. A 2L silvertop from a pre 95 car is fine non cat for SVA. There was some talk of the 1800 being a freer reving engine but once you take off the 2L flywheel which is HUGE it will rev to 7000 all day. 1800 engines were cheaper and more readily available a couple of years back but thats no longer true. I can't think of any good reason for fitting an 1800.

I think that there is a misconception amongst some people, namely westfield builders, that becasue it was true in the olden days, a 2.0 is heavier than an 1800...

With the zetec its more or less the same engine with bigger pistons and a longer stroke as far as im aware, something similar to the differences in a k series rover lump??

The other point is which lump to go for??

If you took a standard mondeo 2.0, it puts out around 130bhp.

Better to look for a mondeo si 2.0, which pushes out nearer 150bhp.

On the other hand if you use the zetec from an early 1800 escort xr3i, itll push out 130bhp, due to sportier cams, and a better designed inlet as standard. Plus as said before no probs with the flywheel etc to contend with.

or just take a regular 1800 zetec which pushes 115bhp

Then again these power figures dont mean a lot as most builders are hardly going to have the same exhaust / inlet set up as was in the donor car, plus a lot of us will be using our own ecu map, throttle bodies, twin carbs etc. So its hard to say what youll end up with.

I think you're mistaken.... Any Mondeo 2.0 running aftermarket ignition will be good for 160 - 170 bhp as standard.

The difference in the SI is the ECU, nothing to do with Cams or anything else.

WIth the Escort XR3i 130bhp - again this is due to the size of the throttle body & the ECU. We used an XR2i 1800 at Barkston last year, I did a bit of research...

You can spend more money if you want but the engines are the same...
