Finaly got the head back on, timed in the cam the fun way with a dial gauge and protractor (pain in the wotsits that was) fitted the new variable fan controller, thermostat 77deg jobbie as advised by Big Jim (QTH370) and managed to find someone older than 14 in my local Ford dealer who advised green top temp sender (PF1657685 304101) to go with the mark 5 escort gauges Richard was supplying with series three.

It works! No, I don't mean the engine (although it does). I mean the temperature gauge!! First time in three years that it has told the truth. Also seems to have stopped the fuel needle from taking the odd wander round the dial which it used to do now and again.

Did you remove the "baffle" from the bottom of the stat?

Yes, wierd looking stat till that was taken off, then it looked like a normal sierra one and fitted like a glove.

what it's for, is in the vehicle (engine) that it was designed for, as the stat opens up, that baffle closes off a waterway inside the cylinder head, under the stat. BMC engines used to be like that.
