Does anyone know where i could get my hands on an rs 200 box as i have been through 2 gearboxes in as many weeks (thats what i get for buying a second hand gearbox). i have been told that the rs 200 gearbox is alot stronger as it was "rally ready". Any help would be welcomed.

thanks all

Rob

do you mean RS2000 gearbox mk2 ?

i was told that a rs 200 gearbox would fit but would a rs2000 gearbox MK2 fit a 2.0L pinto carb engine

RS200 = 4WD Group B rally car, so doubt this is the one!

Escort RS2000 used a 2.0 pinto engine but the gearbox is only 4 speed (and standard box as put in a cortina), so many owners upgrade to to the type 9 box as currently fitted to your car (i.e. From a Sierra).

The type 9 is usually a fairly hardy box unless you are pushing lots of power/torque through it. As this is your second box are you sure there is no other underlying fault with the car?

Thanks

Duncan

I dont know what is killing the boxes. All i know is the first one started getting a grating sound so we put a new one (second hand from scrappy) in and after about 100 miles we started getting the same grinding noise and this time it seems to sound like things are being thrown around inside the gearbox. when you slow down the grinding gets slower and now and again on gear changes there is a massive bang and the car jolts (HARD). i dont really force the car everywhere i go and apart from my youtube donught video, i have not done any silly bugger stuff in the car since. And i think the car is only around the 100bhp mark so thats not a drama either. Last time we changed the box we replaced the needle bearings as these had collapsed.

This is the car so you can get a better idea:

2.0L pinto (possibally with a uprated cam but dont know)

twin choke webber 32/36

sierra rear diff without lsd

i dont know if that info helps and if you need anything else i will supply.

really need to find out whats wrong and fix it.

thanks for all your time ppl.

Rob

Is this the pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft that the first motion shaft fits into ?

sounds a bit like something is moveing around

pos either badly ballanced prop

or no crank bush,

type 9 is a good box and as said should take 200ish bhp, i think there is another prob causing you to destroy boxes.

the big bang could be it trying to jump out of gear.

perhaps you have been unlucky and got hold of 2 boxes with two different probs

Get a reconditioned box with a warranty next time...... RS 2000 box is no stronger.

James had no probs so it does seem strange perhaps something is on it's way out on the prop & running completely out of balance? Maybe the 2nd box was bad too.......

hi terry, yes its the pilot bearing that fits right in the end of the crank. but its not a roller bearing on this one, its needle bearings. its a half inch wide circle of metal, half inch diameter and has half inch needle bearing running round the inside
