Hi all, Id like to get a quicker rack for my 2b, any suggestions on something that will fit straight in? Ive seen the ones on ebay from GTS for around £60 would they be suitable?

thanks.

Worth a try but if you have a wishbone 2B it may not fit I believe you will need the escort rack. Which ever power you fit grease it up and link the pipes up so as not to get dirt in

Hi Ive fitted a Sierra power steering rack, set up just as Chris suggested & it works a treat.

BUT im using a wishbone setup designed to use the standard Sierra width rack.

(See attached pics)

I also needed to make up a new lower steering column, the Power rack has a much longer connecting shaft & a different spline fitting. Keep the whole column from the XR4 if you might use the rack from it.

I think the escort rack is narrower...its certainly the one most other 7s use.

Rally design can supply different ratios.

You need to make up a new lower column, between the triangular bar exiting the upper steering column, and the splined rod into the rack. keep the lower splined joint from the XR4 column, withthe UJ which fits over a piece of triangular tube.

I welded a piece of rod, ground to a triangular shape at the bottom, into a piece of thick walled cold rolled steel, and welded a UJ to the other end. Work out the length carefully, as theres not much room for error.

If you can make it up, any engineering shop, or garage should be able to weld it for you.

Ive just re-read the above & confused myself!!.....I'll take some pics tomorrow to make it clearer!! ;)

You need to identify what rack you have in your car at the moment. There seems to be three possibilities 1) Hybrid Metro 2) Sierra 3) Escort.

I convinced myself I had an Escort Rack in my 2002 wishbone 2B and bought a quick rack from GTS only to find it wasn't. I found a part number on my existing rack (3.4 turns, so too slow for my liking) and emailed the maker (TRW) to find out what it was. Their expert advised me it was a Hybrid Metro rack (seems to have a narrower central tube than a standard one), that was a special build and no longer available. So those of us with these that need a replacement after GBS run out will have a problem, and quicker versions are not available anyway. To change to an Escort rack means a new / modified chassis cross member, new rack extensions, and, since the splines are different, a new lower steering U.J. Looking at the steering geometery, I think the Escort rack will be too wide in relationship to the inner wishbone mounts and might cause other problems anyway, so I've stuck with what I've got for now
