Electric Fan For The Lightweight

Gents,

The viscous fan does not fit into the Lightweight, so a Honda electric fan is supplied with the kit.

However, this means that it will have to be switched on and off automatically somehow.

Could a kind person tell me the best way to do this (the DVDs say nothing)?! I noticed this

for sale by Westfield, but is there a cheaper alternative? Also, anyone drawn a wiring diagram

for a switched fan system?

Cheers,

Pete :D

These guys do one in products & extra products (can't link you to it as they use domain name ghosting so all pages are called the same).....

http://www.premierwiring.co.uk/

They also do one of the adjustable ones where you put a thermocouple in the top hose & clamp down around it's lead. Burton do a plastic one for £20 ish but I have had bad experience with that, the plastic seems to insulate the sender & means it reacts at a lot higher temp than it should.

These guys will have something too.... http://www.nfauto.co.uk/

As for wiring diag & lots of other stuff see http://nw.rhocar.org that wiring diag earths through the starter motor windings so the fan is automatically switched off when the key is switched to position 3 (gives you more oomph for starting). You can also ground to the chassis (mine is done that way) & let it run....

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the info. I see on the Premier Wiring site that the Pinto one is 38mm O/D, which is the size of

the feed from the bottom of the radiator. I was assuming that the fan switch was in the top pipe back to

the rad, but I suppose that just tells you that the engine is hot rather than the radiator itself. So, I'll stick the

switch in the bottom pipe, unless I'm mistaken?!

Also thanks a lot for the wiring tip - I like the idea on the NW site, simple but effective B)

Thanks,

Pete

I dont think it will ever turn on the fan that way.

They are normally fitted in the top hose....thats the water exiting from the head, ie at engine temp.

If you can wait a while, there are often stalls at the shows which sell lengths of coolant hose with a fitting for a switch, usually they already have a switch installed.

Yep goes in the top hose. That one fits on standard cortina hose as supplied with the 2b kits, I don't think you'll have a problem with it. The price has gone up, they used to be about 15 quid.....

You could make one from steel brass or copper & braze or solder it, seen that done before.

If you use one of those adjustable ones, be careful how you route the wire & be aware that if you release the hose clamp & re-tighten at any time then there's about a 60% chance it will leak/weep. The bonus with them is you can have it coming on any time you want rather than relying on fixed points.
