No Adam, there is a large, often difficult to undo, screw in the backplate.

The little tube is just a vent.

W/ the removable plate on the back of the l/w, filling the diff isn't too difficult, actually. It would much more difficult to go thru that top hole. I wondered why RH put that top hole in, actually. My guess is to allow more ventilation, both for that vent spout, and overall cooling of the diff.
