any tips for getting it off once its gone off ?

have removed the majoity of it with a stanley knife but would like to get it all off

I can't promise anything, but WD40 will dissolve silicon sealant, so might be worth a try, either that or see if you can work out what the solvent is, and find something else with the same solvent in.

You can buy some proper sika flex removal liquid. browse the tinterweb. i used to rely on the stuff!!

Your not suppose to use it to seal petrol tank fillers etc. so I guess petrol would disolve it (might be slow though).
