I've read the latest web edition of the IVA manual & can find no reference to front no. plate ---all details are there for rear but not front---any-one know---do we still have the benefit of an IVA tester posting on here???

As the car has no number plates when submitted for IVA test the plates themselves don’t come into it but the light for the back one and hence its positioning does. The rules for plates are they should be vertical if possible - not easy on a 7 - and be of the correct size. Well that is the way I read it anyway.

For IVA they need to be able to hold up a number-plate sized template to where the plate will be fitted, to make sure one will physically fit.

Thanks for replies; would still like some thing more certain about front plate; seems strange IVA give 2 options for rear & no mention of front.

As has been said, the regulations are for the *lighting* of the rear numberplate, not the numberplate itself. with the front numberplate not requiring any lighting, then it doesn't fall under the regulations.

But when you do come to drive you car on the road, it then has to comply with other regulations & laws.

It must then have both a rear and front numberplate, and as Chris has said, the front numberplate must be as near to vertical as possible ( those stick-on ones across the nosecone are technically illegal, although owners could argue that there's nowhere else, but I don't think they'd win with a persistant officer) and the letters must be of a certain font, and size, and spaced correctly, on the correct reflective background)

so, what does this mean for your test? it means that the rear numberplate light has to be fixed and working in a position with enough room for the correct sized numberplate to be mounted so the illumination will highlight it.
