Confessions Of An Engine Builder

Well the news is out.......

Despite promising to keep it to himself, a man who shall remain nameless (Gavin Cocks) could not keep quite for more than a few seconds when I left the barn and another turned up.

The sorry story....

First start of my looong Pinto build and Gavin was there for moral support or was he there for the chance of a good laugh?

We push it out of the barn.

We crank it over, a lot, so much that the new geared high torque starter goes hot.

There was a few tiny pops as if it nay start but not much.

Back in the barn, a bit despondent.

Check spark with an old plug, there is spark.

Check plugs.

Check fuel & pressure, carbs show fuel dribbling from bell mouths.

No. 1.  clean and bright, no smell of petrol.

No. 2. Clean and bright, no smell of petrol.

No. 3. Clean and bright, no smell of petrol and as I am putting it back, what's that in the plug hole, get torch, closer look, yep it's a paper hand towel I Had put in the inlet manifold to stop gasket crud getting in when I was cleaning off the old ones. Dho.

3 came out of the inlet ports as we turned over by hand, the forth partly came out the rest blew out of the exhaust when we started the engine.

Laugh? How Gavin kept a straight face I don't know.

the feeling when something like that happens is an odd one... on one hand you are massively embarressed ,but on the other hand it works and was something really daft.....

been there done it......

worst thing is no one will let you forget it!!!
