Hello all,

I have started a GBS zero this spring and i am just about to fit the engine and gearbox. The next stage for me will be sourcing the correct starter motor, alternator and Engine management system. Now i know i can buy new from kitspares but i would like to source the items from a donor car. Now i know that the fitting of the ,starter motor and alternator should be straight forward. My concern is the Ecu unit and how to configure it. Can anyone share their knowledge with me i would be very grateful.

Many Thanks

My immediate are are.........

What engine? Zetec?

The standard Ford ECU will work but can be complex and can't be modified so you can't change anything on the engine.

Megasquirt is the cheaper option but quite involved.

Emerald & Omex worth a look but will need a full rolling road setup.

Seen at some Kit car shows is Kronenburg management, don't know much about them but remember there prices were keen.

if its a zetec in a zero you will struggle with a sierra Alternator, you will want to go for something small like a denso. the starter motor, you are fine using a sierra motor for that

engine management, now you're talking, are you using TB's? bike carbs? how much do you want to spend, how much work do you want to do yourself setting it up?

A word of caution. You cannot JUST use any sierra starter motor for a zetec. This has been covered lots of times on here, but I'll tell you again. You need either one from a 2.0 DOHC or one from a 1.8 CVH engine. The Pinto starter motor can ONLY be used if you make (from memory) a 14mm spacer as the dog shaft is too long due to the zetec ring gear being closer to the back of the engine. You can buy a Lucas LR707 but expect to pay £70 roughly. Get a DOHC or a CVH one, £10 from a breaker. Also, the Pinto one comes in two size widths. You will need the slimmer one if you are doing the spacer route. This is of course if you are using the type 9 or type E gear box.

And another thing...... If you are using a type 9 from a V6 then you will also need a 25mm spacer plate between the box and bell housing, as the first motion shaft is longer.

I'm not sure about the MT75 box, perhaps someone else can give that answer for you?

And don't forget to add to what Daren says a Blacktop sump makes it more difficult still.
