Just how dim are they?

If they just appear dim in comparison to your tin top, you can get higher wattage bulbs.

If you are getting a adjustable beam, it is unlikely to be an earthing problem.

Check they are correctly connected. They will work but dim regardless which way you connect the earth, dip and main beam wires. If this doesn't sort it then it may be voltage drop due to use of thinner wire than required. And do refresh the earthing point. Can't hurt.

Getting a bit con fused with lights I connected sealed light direct to battery dip, main and side all work and are good and bright but when plugged in at light they all work but are dim.

The stalks are the correct 83g ones and all work but the main beam seems to be connected to the earth on the light connector and the side light earth.

I understand these are neg switching without relays but how do they work anyone understand them.

83bg stalks should be positive switching. That just means the switch when switched on supplies 12v to the relay switching circuit (pin 86), the other side of the relay switching circuit (pin 85) being permanently earthed.

A negative switched relay does the opposite. The switch when switched on supplies an earth to the relay switching circuit (pin 85), the other side of the relay switching circuit (pin 86) being permanently connected to an ignition live or battery live.

Both types have pin 30 on them permanently connected to a 12v permanent live via a fuse and heavier duty wire and send this out pin 87 to the horn/light/fuelpump/etc when the relay is switched on. The power for the say main beam thus flows from battery, through a fuse, through the relay switched circuit and off to the bulb. It doesn't have to go through the switch or mingle in any way with the switching circuit.

Looking at the back of the sealed unit you have the earth at 9.00oclock, dip at 12.00 and main at 3.00. Your plug is wired correctly with lucas loom colours. Black earth, blue/red is dip and blue/white is main.

Probably within a foot of the plug those wires join the car loom. If it's a sierra loom black joins a brown (or may just bolt to earth on the chassis), blue/red joins a yellow and blue white joins a white.

If you have a Vicki Green loom then it uses the same Lucas colours.

I doubt very much that the column switch is faulty. If the lights turn on even dim then it's OK.

Take up Simon's offer. He's good with electrickery.

Get some wire sorted out, get Simon round .

By-pass the fuse box and run new lengths of wire to lights or just around the fuse box, with in-line fuses.

Quick simple, safe fix for the summer and look at a re-wire of lighting circuits in the winter.
