ken mine stays shiny cos I grab it hard and thrust it around until it makes a grinding noise then I ease of and take it gentle like

I often go around with one hand on mine, it stops the end bit falling off.

Absolutely no finess. You are supposed to start of by feeding it in slowly and acurately. You can then get faster and rougher as your ride feels like it needs to.
