Pinto 2.0 Ignition Timing

Pintogogo

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,,

Ive tried several times to get my Pinto timed correct using strobe, vacuum pipe disconnected @1000 rpm each time and when I go around the 12 deg BTDC it loses a bit of top end pulling power & pinks a bit and around the 10 deg BTDC it seems to run better but backfires through exhaust (or sometimes carb) when swiitched off

Any Ideas

Cheers

Harry

Iran my 2.1 at various settings before fitting a modded head and an Accuspark dizzy and it being set up on the rollers ,if I remember correctly it was set at 9 degs at idle and max advance of 30 ish at 3,000 ish , running a 38 dgas with mild jetting alterations it gave 125 bhp at the wheels, it some times popped on shut off but not consistently , dont run to much advance it could cost you a piston [if std ] I did 1 but fortunatly the bore was ok ,hope this helps mick

What cam have you got? I would think that 9° was about the most a std. one would take without pinking. I use about 14° with a 285 and modded head but then you run into too much advance at high revs with the centrifugal advance of a normal dizzy.

pintos generally run better at tick over if the ignition is 10 or 12 degrees however they will pink their heads off.....if you adjust it to 6-8 degrees they dont pink but run crap at tick over....performance at full revs is ok.....you can buy or make a "Pegged" distributor for the pintos these allow higher advance at low revs and restrict the advance at high revs.......here.......http://nw.rhocar.org/tuningdizzy.htm

weirdly its on this forum already........
