2 L Pinto

:gdit: i wonder if anyone can help with a spot of advice for new builder

. i have taken collection of the 2b4 kit and have a 2 litre pinto engine for it...

and is a 205 block which i understand is good

however i understand from ford that it is a 2 litre engine from a transit... even more a 57kw/78ps low compression engine.

i have got myself somewhat confused checking the forums re transit engines etc

is there any drawback in fitting it as it is or will it need some work to the gubbins?

any advice most welcome

Hi Adrian,

Well I'm not an expert on engines but surely the 205 block is an injection engine from a standard Sierra. My engine has a 205 block and came from a Sierra GLSi.

I understood that the transit was a carb engine so not a 205 block,

- is it carb or injection?

- has the engine been modified in any way?

- where did you get the engine from?

- Do you have a donor car registered to you (with SORN declared on it) to get through registration?

I'm sure that the 205 block is standard after a certain date, certainly my 2l engine is late '88 and carburettor and that's a 205

I'm not sure how Ford got the low compression version, cylinder head or pistons or a combination of both.

Im unsure about the low compression side of things, but I think that the transit shared the camshaft with a P100, "only suitable as a weapon" I think I heard it described has once!!

I am almost finished building with a P100 engine in. Its got a 205 block and is low compression. The low compresion bit is done with the pistons (well, i am 99% sure). The P100 engine should mean an easy SVA from a noise point of view.

I have a 2 litre injection engine out of the 88 Ghia that I will be using as a doner for my second build (with a V8 instead). But since the P100 engine has a nice strong block and an 8.5:1 compression ratio I am thinking of super charging. I don't want the hassle of plumming a turbo into the exhaust and super chargers out of the new minis can be had for £130 just about new on ebay.

Looking at the specs of the super charger I can run 10psi of boost by running the super charger at up to 15,000 rpm (with the engine at 5,850 rpm). Its only rated to 14,000 rpm but if it goes wrong I can get another one cheaply.

The high torque from the P100 engine makes backing into the garage very difficult. The clutch is either dipped or fully up, there is no slip. So you go from standing to 10mph instantly. I did discover the answer last weekend: just leave the handbrake on.

The 205 block was originally used for the Cossy engine, as it was "beefier" to take the extra power. Uncle Henry then decided to use it for all the Pinto engines.

The bore & stroke for the 2000cc pinto engine, wiether in a Sierra or Transit is 90.82mm x 76.95mm (standard) but the compression ratio for the Transit engine is 8.1 / 1, as opposed to 9.2 / 1 for the sierra engine. I believe the difference is in the cylinder head (but will stand corrected if wrong!)

i got this engine from a local breakers. it has a ford vv carb fitted. and as far as i can tell hasnt been modified in any way. i have a donor that i stripped and have the v5, as this had a cvh fitted i am using a pinto instaed... the cvh doesnt fit the chjassis without moving the upper and lower crossmembers, and as i have a stainless chassis i opted to change engine...

should i stick this new engine on the v5 foe ease at sva or just get a letter of dating from ford?

thanks for the info so far, i am a bit clearer now.... now for a day getting greasey.

Do as Dave says get the V5 changed while the donor is SORNd then you don’t have to worry about age of engine as it was in the donor DVLA will accept it as the same year.

The 205 blocks are indeed beefier, used in Sierra cossies. They are covetted by fellow Capri drivers as they can be bored out to 2.1, giving a bit more torque.

The escort cossie used a 202 block.

The 205 can pop up in some surprising places.

I am sure Big Jim is right and the heads need skimming to increase compression. The low compression 2litre pintos had 1600 camshafts fitted. They are quite torquey motors that have no valve interference. Ideal for an old tranny, but for your new built sports car?

If the head isn't unleaded, get the exhaust valve seats done when the head is skimmed and add a 2litre or hotter cam.

If the head isn't unleaded, get the exhaust valve seats done when the head is skimmed and add a 2litre or hotter cam.

Or better still, get a head off an EFI engine, already OK for unleaded, better porting, even a better "standard" cam, but whilst it's off, I'd stick a FR32 cam in it.

Then go look to Dave Andrews web site for the article about ignition curves for performance cams, and My article on how to take your dizzy apart.

life just isn't simple any more!

when changing the v5 though wont u need an inspection report
No it is only an engine change. I believe the only time a report is required is if you are putting a car back on the road which has been previously been declared a total loss. Part way through my build I found my donor had the wrong engine so I just applied for change of number on V5 and that was that with no problems on registering

oh right i remember when i changed an engine a few years back in a van, converted it from diesel to petrol, they sent me it back stating i needed a reciept of purchase or an inspection report or similar, i geuss it was due to me writing the standard ford block code down and not the engine no. i never bothered with changing it as i scrapped the van after..
