Clutch Or Gearbox Problem

I took my hood out today and at one point I had trouble selecting gears, this was while I was moving , I also had a simialr problem a few days ago when I could not select a gear to pull away I managed to get it it to reverse then had troulble getting it out again. Both times I have been able to drive the car afterwards with out any problems

Is this a sign of a clutch on the way out, some thing needs adjusting or some thing more sinister?

thanks

I had a similar problem with my renault laguna, then one day I reversed it out of the drive, went to put it in first and it wouldn't do anything... There was no noise from the 'box, and it wasn't particularly difficult to put in or take out of gear on that morning, but that was it... 2 weeks, and a second hand gearbox, later it was back on the road, turned out that the lining had come away inside the 'box and ad bolloxed everything up!

Ah well, £95 for the 'box (including postage) off of a car that had done 40k (rather less than my 128k!!!) and she is good as new!

I hope, whatever the problem, that you get it sorted cheaply!

Chris thanks for the reply I'm kind of hoping this wont be some thing as major as this as changing the gear box, as this may mean that I have to take the engine out.

Thanks

It sounds like you've got oil or grease onto the flywheel somehow, I once had the same problem with an Escort, where Mr Ford had put a new clutch in, complete with a blob of grease in the input bearing, this melted and stuck the clutch spinner to the flywheel, and gave me the same problems.

Other thing to check, are you getting full 'pull' on the actuator arm? ie, is the cable seizing up?

Jim, I dont really understand your second point about the cable siezing up, would the clutch be stiff on the pedal ? I guess I need to check the movement on the actuator arm ?

thanks

I'd change the cable as Jim says...its easy and cheap ;)

If that don't fix it then goto scrappy and get another box :( unless you can afford a shiney new one :D

all thanks for the info, can I clarify a few things please :

Bob where is this yellow cam gear on the clutch pedal Ive look on the clutch pedal and I cant see any thing like a yellow cam gear.

Jim what is the oil level that you have mentioned ?

sorry if these questions are a bit basic but I feel slightly out of my depth at the moment and as I did not build the car my knowledge is some what limited

thanks again

Hi Rob,

Here's a piccy of my pedal box

It has the advantage of nothing else around it

What you are looking for is the big yellow cam with teeth

Hope This Helps

You check the oil in the gearbox by removing the plug that is fitted about ½ way up the left-hand side of the g/box, if memory serves me correct, it's a 3/8 square hole (use 3/8th drive ratchet) remove the plug, if oil starts to come out, put the bugger back in, if it doesn't, fill it 'till it does.

Whilst we're on, if you physically lift up the clutch pedal, it should release the mechanism (pawl) to allow the yellow ratchet gear to be pulled against it's spring, allowing the release of the cable from it.

Another thing to check is, are you at maximum travel on the ratchet? there needs to be a spacer where the cable enters the pedal box, to allow for correct adjustments of the ratchet, if that spacer isn't correct, you could be at the 'fullest' extent of the ratchet. It's easy to check, just look where the ratchet pawl is sitting in the teeth, it should be somewhere near the middle of them, not right at the end.
