just out of interest, im restoring my 7 and have some really shoddy and rusted chrome lights that need re-plating. Is it in the realms of a novice DIY'r to re-plate the headlights and other bits? or would i need a costly kit?

my apologies for the barage of questions

cheers

I know that it's possible to brew beer in a plastic dustbin - but I would not recommend DIY electroplating.

For chromium plating (if memory serves) you need to strip all original plate off then apply copper , nickel and then chromium. Plus the odd acid rinse and buffing inbetween.

Buying the chemicals and making up the solutions could be fun.

Better to try and find a local electroplater - or buy decent new ones

They could look reasonably smart if well painted.

Does anyone know of stainless lamp shells being available out there ??

I wouldn't entertain the idea of chrome plating yourself, eerrr I mean doing the plating your self not ... oh you get the idea. This is due to the amount of a cyanide based product yopu need for etching the surface and prepareing the part. Just pop down to boots and try and buy a bucket of cyanide these days!!
