Cooling Fan Switch

The RH wiring diagram says that I need to fit a switch for the radiator cooling fan. I don't like that idea because I'm sure I'll forget to switch it on after driving my normal car all the time.

How can I make the fan switch automatically depending on water temperature? Do I need one of those aftermarket kits or is that electrical connection on the radiator something I can use?

There are kits available that break in to the plumbing and have sensors etc, http://www.nfauto.co.uk/temp_sender_housing.htm

but for a cheaper solution have the fan permanently on.

Have a look here for how to wire a fan up. I recommend a thermostatic switch in the top water pipe.

Thanks Jim that looks like a useful link! What is the electrical connector for on the radiator that RH supply? Is it a thermostat?

Premier Wiring do an Aluminium boss to hold a stock thermostat, very good.

Burton do a plastic version of the same. I've had both. The Aluminium one was better in my opinion.

didn't someone say you can use the thermostat housing of a 1300ohv escort which incorporates a switch?

If this is correct, then that a good cheap way of doing it, you could possibly use the switch as well, but it might only come on late, wereas with the aftermarket ones, there is a variety of switch on temps

Topic here, albeit with a negative reply to the suggestion.

My housemate has a 1300 escort so i might have a nosey under the bonnet :D

It was me who stated you could use the thermostat housing from a 1300 ohv mk5 escort. I can't understand why people can't get this to fit as it was a straight swap for the usual pinto housing, it may be that there are several version in the Escort although I don't think the bolt pattern would have changed. Another possible explanation is that I don't like using the cam cover on a pinto (Another can of worms that i'll not open here) so it maybe this that is causing the problem for other people.

I don't own the car anymore but I beleive it is (was?) owned by someone who occasionally pops onto the board under the name of Snoopy (also mate of Bazwaz) so if might be worth contating him to see if he has any photos.

Thanks

Duncan

Hi Richard.

What radiator have you got fitted to your Superspec? I've wired my cooling fan into the thermostat that was in the radiator that came with my Superspec. Not had any problems with overheating yet (fingers crossed!) Went for a run out on one of the hottest days last year and despite getting stuck in traffic the fan kicked in automagically and kept everything nice and cool. The temp gauge usually gets up to about 3/4 of normal before the fan kicks in and brings the temp back down to about the middle of the gauge.

You just need to make sure that you know the polarity of the fan motor, as it'll work much better blowing air through the radiator than sucking it through

I couldnt get the switch on my SuperSpec radiator to turn on, so like Derek I got one of the adjustable ones from Car Builder Sollutions.

Works a treat and is fully adjustable with a wide temperature range. Not bad for £24, I have seen them a lot more expensive than that.

Sensor goes right inside the top hose, no cutting or drilling, fitted in minutes.

I'm all sorted thanks guys.

I treated myself to a Revotec inline thermostatic fan controller with all the wiring, relay etc attached. Its adjustable and a doddle to fit, cost about £60 all told.

Now all I need to do is get to stage where I can start the car and try it out!

1 'spare' bit of tube

1 22mm nut from local supplier 45p

Welded together

two jubilee clips

I stock switch from a late escort 50p from Scrappy

Relay from Sierra donor 'Free'

I cut and inserted into the top tube and this seems to have been reliable for the first 1000 miles at least and if you stick with a standard switch they are cheap and easy to replace if they fail.

A bit time consuming but all part of the fun :D
