My t5 has a tiny bit of play...just enough that you can feel it. In general, i believe a bit of backlash (play) is normal in almost all gears....but too much obviously implies worn gears or some other type of problem.

Those bits of copper pipe may well be used to fit various bits together outside the box, then are slipped over the shafts and the preasembled bits slid off and then the copper dummy shaft removed.

Untidy workmanship may have left them or dropped them in.

i agree with Paul, most probably used as a drift to protect the surfaces of the gears being fit, but it shouldnt have neen there, better to get it replaced than find out its buggered in a few thousand miles.

 

excellent customer service though.
