Copper Grease In Wheel Nuts?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

just wanted to confirm that it is ok to put copper grease on my wheel nuts, they are a bit stiff at the moment. Don't want them to come loose by themselves but when i want to get them off it would be good if they were a bit smoother on teh threads.

thanks

Not a prolem, just try to keep it off the facing surfaces.

Best stuff ever made, 'tis great on spark plug threads and brake assemblys also.

Have to agree, it's the best stuff ever on threads that might be exposed to the elements, I also use on the back of the disc pads when replacing them, it can help to reduce any noise that might be caused through them.

After years of working with stainless I always use copper slip, it prevents the threads 'picking up' which basically means they weld themselves together.

I just use it out of habit, its also good for high temp aplications such as spark plug thread and back of brake pads etc

I use it for my stock and horse trailer ,I smear it over the back of the wheels rims where they contact the brake drums, stops them from rusting on also on the wheel nuts

i'm sorry to go against the grain but was advised many moons ago about the use of copper/any grease on wheel nuts as using it may cause the threads to stretch as too much torque is used to tighten them up and allow the nuts to come un done

i use it on face between wheel and hub to help removal of wheel but never on threads on stuff you want to stay tight.

may be wrong and will stand in front of firing line ..

I'm with Craig on this one - never ever grease wheel nuts. A smear of grease or better copper grease on the mating face will help prevent them becoming one with each other but on wheel-nuts it just messes with the torque figures and clamping forces that they are designed to have. They should be done dry but if they are stiff then only ever apply a drop of light oil and once the nut has been run onto the threads and back off again they should be wiped clean before re-fitting.
